The finances behind Derby County’s move for Sammie Szmodics revealed

Derby County are set to make Sammie Szmodics a permanent signing at the end of the season after an appearance-related clause in his loan agreement was activated.

The 31-year-old returned to Pride Park after reuniting with John Eustace, who previously managed him at Blackburn Rovers. Szmodics initially joined Derby on loan from Ipswich Town after making the move to Portman Road following his remarkable 27-goal Championship campaign with Blackburn in 2023/24.

He played an important role in Derby’s push for the play-offs during the second half of last season, although the Rams ultimately missed out on the final day.

That contribution convinced Derby to bring him back for another campaign, this time on a season-long loan that already looks destined to become a permanent transfer.

How much will Derby pay for Szmodics?

According to reports, Szmodics has already made enough appearances to activate the permanent-transfer clause included in his loan agreement.

That means Derby are now committed to completing the deal unless an unlikely season-ending injury intervenes.

The initial fee is reportedly set at £2.7 million, although that figure could rise significantly if Eustace’s side secure promotion to the Premier League.

Should Derby achieve promotion this season, the total cost of the deal could increase to around £5 million.

That is potentially a major boost for Ipswich, who could almost double their eventual return depending on Derby’s final position.

For now, though, Derby have plenty of work to do. The Rams have endured a difficult opening to the Championship campaign, collecting only five points from their first eight games and sitting in the bottom three.

A late Mo Fuseni equaliser against Burnley prevented another defeat before the international break and ensured Derby avoided dropping to the foot of the table.

Szmodics continuing to contribute

Szmodics has not been able to replicate the extraordinary scoring numbers he produced for Blackburn in 2023/24, but his Derby numbers have still been encouraging.

He registered three goals and one assist in 13 appearances after arriving at Pride Park last season.

This campaign has brought another two goals and an assist in seven appearances, while he has also found the net in the EFL Cup.

Considering Derby’s struggles in creating chances, those numbers represent a useful contribution from the attacking midfielder.

Another double-digit Championship goal return would represent a strong season for Szmodics, particularly given that his 27-goal Blackburn campaign was an exceptional outlier compared with his previous Championship record.

Derby need Szmodics to help turn things around

With injuries affecting several members of Eustace’s squad, Szmodics has increasingly become one of Derby’s most important attacking players.

Mo Fuseni has also shown plenty of promise when given opportunities, but the Rams will need more consistent contributions from their attacking players if they are to climb away from danger.

The point against Burnley offered some relief, but Derby’s poor start remains a concern.

Szmodics is now guaranteed to become a permanent Derby player, and the Rams will be hoping he can play a major role in changing their fortunes before the season gets away from them.
