Oli McBurnie may be feeling the heat as Scotland fans turn their Rangers frustration on him

Scotland fans may be allowing their frustration with Rangers to spill over onto Oli McBurnie.

The Hull City striker’s return to the Scotland squad after five years has not exactly been welcomed by everyone in the Tartan Army, with some supporters making their feelings clear during the goalless draw with Slovenia.

McBurnie completed the entire 90 minutes, but his performance was met with a mixed reaction from the travelling Scotland support.

The striker has never hidden his affection for Rangers, with his family playing a major role in his connection to the Ibrox club. Although McBurnie was born in Leeds, he has previously explained that his parents and grandparents helped make him a Rangers supporter.

That connection could be one factor behind the hostility directed towards him, although there are other reasons why some Scotland supporters remain unhappy with the forward.

McBurnie has previously found himself in hot water over comments about representing Scotland.

During his time at Sheffield United, he was filmed making dismissive remarks about playing for the national team during a dressing-room conversation. He later apologised and insisted the comments were simply banter, but some members of the Tartan Army appear to have held onto the incident.

Now STV Radio host Ewen Cameron has questioned whether McBurnie’s Rangers allegiance is also contributing to the treatment he has received.

Cameron, who is openly a Hearts supporter, called on sections of the Scotland support to ease up on the Hull striker after the criticism he received over the weekend.

Speaking on the STV Radio Football Show on 28 September, Cameron said:

“I would just like to say something to the Tartan Army, and it’s not all the Tartan Army, but lay off McBurnie.

“Some of the abuse that he’s got over the weekend, even after a brilliant performance, is bang out of order. These members of the Tartan Army should take a long, hard look at themselves.

“You’re all idiots. And I’m going to ask this question. Is it because of what he said and because he’s a Rangers fan? Is it a combination of both?”
