Celtic Could Beat Man Utd and Tottenham to Key Target Transfer

Celtic could find themselves in a potential race with Manchester United and Tottenham for Kieran McKenna if all three clubs are forced to consider a change in the dugout.

The former Ipswich Town manager has been linked with a number of high-profile vacancies despite currently being without a club, and his previous connections to both Manchester United and Tottenham make him an obvious name whenever managerial succession plans are discussed.

However, Celtic could also have a strong claim if Martin O’Neill eventually decides to leave Parkhead.

Premier League pressure could create McKenna scramble

Both Manchester United and Tottenham have endured difficult starts to the 2026/27 campaign.

United have managed just one victory from their opening five matches, while Tottenham sit at the bottom of the Premier League table with only two points.

Michael Carrick and Roberto De Zerbi are therefore facing increased scrutiny, although there is no indication that either manager is currently on the verge of losing his job.

Reports suggest both clubs remain supportive of their managers, while continuing normal contingency planning behind the scenes.

Jacobs, speaking on the Market Madness podcast, explained that succession planning does not necessarily mean a managerial change is imminent.

Tottenham’s situation is particularly complicated, with the club reportedly still considering changes to their wider sporting structure before making any decision regarding De Zerbi’s position.

That could potentially leave McKenna on the radar of several clubs should circumstances change.

McKenna has connections to both Premier League clubs

The 40-year-old has obvious links to both Manchester United and Tottenham.

McKenna worked within the academies of both clubs before establishing himself as a senior manager at Ipswich, where he guided the Tractor Boys back into the Premier League.

His reputation grew considerably during his time at Ipswich, and he has since been linked with several major jobs.

McKenna has also been seen attending matches at both Manchester United and Tottenham recently, although his presence should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of imminent talks.

The former Ipswich boss has been out of work since leaving the club last summer, meaning he would be available without a compensation fee should an opportunity arise.

Celtic could enter the picture

Celtic could potentially offer McKenna another route back into management.

Martin O’Neill remains in charge at Parkhead and continues to have the backing of chief executive Michael Nicholson, but the club’s recent results have increased scrutiny around his position.
