Celtic Decide on Roy Keane as Four Names Enter Manager Succession Picture

Celtic have drawn up a contingency shortlist of potential managerial replacements should Martin O’Neill eventually decide to leave the club, with Sean Dyche among the names being considered.

However, there is currently no indication that Celtic are preparing to make a change in the dugout.

O’Neill continues to have the backing of the Celtic board and, according to well-placed sources, has not told the club that he intends to step down.

The 74-year-old remains the preferred option at Parkhead, with the club making it clear that his future is ultimately in his own hands.

That position has remained unchanged despite a difficult spell of results.

Celtic suffered successive defeats against Rangers before falling to a 3-1 Europa League loss against Ferencvaros. The latest Old Firm defeat at Celtic Park was particularly damaging, with O’Neill admitting afterwards that he needed to take time to reflect on the situation.

Despite those setbacks, the board have publicly reaffirmed their support for the experienced manager.

Celtic have contingency plans in place

As would be expected at a club of Celtic’s size, the hierarchy has considered potential alternatives should circumstances change.

Four names have emerged in discussions surrounding the Parkhead position.

Former Everton manager Sean Dyche is among them, while Kieran McKenna has also been mentioned as a possible candidate.

A return for former Celtic boss Neil Lennon has been discussed, while current coaching staff member Shaun Maloney has also been considered as someone who could potentially step into the manager’s role.

The existence of the shortlist does not mean Celtic are currently conducting a managerial search.

Instead, it provides the club with options should O’Neill decide that his time in charge has come to an end.

For now, there is no active recruitment process and no indication that an imminent managerial change is being prepared.

Roy Keane is not on Celtic’s shortlist

Roy Keane’s appearance at the latest Old Firm clash sparked speculation among some supporters that the former Manchester United captain could be under consideration for the Celtic job.

Those suggestions have been dismissed by sources familiar with the situation.

Keane was at Celtic Park as a neutral observer and has a long-standing relationship with O’Neill, having worked alongside him with the Republic of Ireland. He is also known to have an affinity with Celtic.

His presence at the derby was therefore not viewed as evidence of any potential managerial discussions.

Sources have made it clear that Keane is not being considered as an option to replace O’Neill.

The current priority remains supporting the existing management team, particularly with Celtic still competing at the top end of the Scottish Premiership and in the Europa League.

O’Neill’s future remains in his own hands

There remains a possibility that O’Neill could decide to step away during the international break, but there has been no indication that he has made such a decision.

Had he intended to resign, the timing of the break would have provided an obvious opportunity for the club to begin planning for a replacement.

Instead, Celtic’s public message remains one of stability.

O’Neill retains the board’s confidence, while the four-man contingency list exists simply to ensure the club is prepared if the situation changes.

For now, the expectation at Parkhead is that O’Neill will remain in charge and attempt to guide Celtic through their current difficulties.
