Rangers star Bojan Miovski handed reality check after latest North Macedonia outing

Bojan Miovski endured a frustrating international outing with North Macedonia, giving Rangers manager Derek McInnes another reminder of the competition for places in his attack.

The Rangers forward started against Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League, but was unable to make much of an impact before being withdrawn in the second half.

North Macedonia were already two goals behind by the time Miovski was replaced in the 56th minute, with Remo Freuler and Zeki Amdouni finding the net for Switzerland.

It was a difficult evening for the 27-year-old, who struggled to influence the game and will now be hoping to respond in his remaining international fixtures.

Miovski struggled to make an impact

Miovski’s statistics highlighted just how little involvement he had during his time on the pitch.

According to FotMob, the Rangers striker recorded only 14 touches throughout the match, with none coming inside Switzerland’s penalty area.

He attempted nine passes and completed 78 per cent of them but failed to create a chance for a teammate.

His defensive contribution was limited to one tackle and one recovery before Sedloski decided to make the change shortly after the hour mark.

For a striker looking to establish himself as a regular option for Rangers, it was not the type of performance that would strengthen his case.

McInnes still has plenty of attacking options

Miovski’s international struggles are particularly relevant given the competition he faces at Ibrox.

McInnes previously described the forward as a “godsend” after his late goal against St Mirren, suggesting that the striker had begun to give the manager another attacking option.

However, earning regular starts will require more consistent performances.

Kevin Kelsy and Ryan Naderi are also competing for opportunities, meaning Miovski cannot afford too many quiet appearances if he wants to move up the pecking order.

His latest North Macedonia performance will therefore serve as a reminder that his Rangers future depends on making the most of the opportunities he receives.

International fixtures give Miovski another chance

The international break is not over for Miovski, giving him an opportunity to put the Switzerland disappointment behind him.

North Macedonia still have fixtures against Slovenia and Scotland, as well as another meeting with Switzerland, providing the Rangers striker with further opportunities to make an impression.

A goal or strong performance could give Miovski valuable confidence before he returns to Auchenhowie.

Equally, another quiet outing would do little to convince McInnes that he should be given a sustained run in the Rangers starting XI.

For now, Miovski appears to have work to do if he wants to become a regular part of McInnes’ plans. The competition for attacking places at Ibrox means even brief opportunities could prove important.
