Footage shows Derek McInnes protecting Djeidi Gassama during Rangers’ Old Firm win

Derek McInnes has shown his support for Djeidi Gassama after the Rangers winger came under scrutiny during his time at Ibrox.

Gassama has endured an inconsistent spell since joining Rangers last summer. The former Sheffield Wednesday player has produced moments of quality but has also struggled to maintain that level regularly.

However, he was involved in another positive Rangers performance during Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Celtic.

Although Gassama did not register a goal or assist, his pace and direct running caused problems for the Celtic defence. His work alongside James Penrice on Rangers’ right flank repeatedly put pressure on Martin O’Neill’s side and helped ease the workload on Rangers’ defence.

Now, footage from the aftermath of the Old Firm clash has highlighted another moment involving Gassama and McInnes.

Following Rangers’ victory at Celtic Park, players and supporters were celebrating the result when Gassama ended up close to the advertising boards in front of the home support.

Fan-recorded footage shared online appears to show Celtic supporters pushing Gassama away as he fell towards the advertising hoardings.

McInnes immediately moved towards his player and took hold of the 23-year-old before guiding him away from the Celtic supporters.

The Rangers boss has already received plenty of praise for the club’s recent results, with the victory at Celtic completing a remarkable start to his Old Firm record.

McInnes has now become only the third Rangers manager, after Graeme Souness and Walter Smith, to win each of his first two meetings with Celtic.

Gassama also played a role in both victories, having featured in Rangers’ 3-0 Premier Sports Cup triumph over Celtic seven days earlier.

While his performances on the pitch continue to be assessed by Rangers supporters, McInnes’ actions after Sunday’s victory provided another indication of the manager’s backing for his player.
