Callum McGregor’s immediate reaction following Celtic’s 3-1 Europa League defeat to Ferencváros has generated discussion after footage from the aftermath appeared online.

The video seems to show the Celtic captain making his way towards the tunnel while a number of his teammates continued towards the supporters gathered inside Celtic Park.

Kieran Tierney and Cameron Carter-Vickers were among those who headed towards the North Curve, while McGregor appeared to walk in the opposite direction.

The moment came after another hugely frustrating evening for Martin O’Neill’s team.

Celtic made a positive start to their Europa League league-phase opener but eventually fell behind. Mika Baur restored parity shortly before the interval, only for Ferencváros to regain the lead before half-time.

Daniel Arzani, who previously represented Celtic, then extended the visitors’ advantage shortly after the restart to complete a miserable evening for the home side.

The result came only days after Celtic suffered a 3-0 defeat against Rangers at Ibrox, meaning tensions were already high around the club.

McGregor footage sparks discussion

The footage has attracted particular attention because of McGregor’s status as Celtic captain.

After difficult results, the skipper is generally among those expected to acknowledge the supporters, making his apparent decision to head towards the tunnel stand out when compared with the actions of several teammates.

However, the brief clip provides only a limited view of what happened immediately after the final whistle.

McGregor still had media responsibilities to fulfil following the match. The midfielder spoke to TNT Sports as well as Celtic’s own media channels, discussing the defeat and the need for the squad to produce a response when Rangers visit Celtic Park on Sunday.

It is therefore possible that his movement towards the tunnel was connected to those commitments rather than a deliberate attempt to avoid the supporters.

There is also no way to establish from the footage alone what McGregor was thinking in that particular moment.

The captain had just experienced his second heavy defeat in the space of five days, and he later spoke openly about the impact the recent results had had on the squad.
