Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac turn Wrexham v Southampton ‘Spygate’ into hilarious spoof

Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have taken a cheeky swipe at Southampton ahead of Saturday’s Championship meeting, using the controversial ‘Spygate’ saga as the punchline in a social media spoof.

The Saints travel to the Racecourse Ground this weekend, giving the Hollywood duo the perfect opportunity to revisit last season’s play-off controversy.

Southampton were removed from the play-off final and handed a four-point deduction after an intern was discovered watching Middlesbrough’s training session. Similar incidents involving Oxford United and Ipswich Town were also reported earlier in the campaign.

In a video apparently created to promote shirt sponsor Firefox, Reynolds begins by saying: “Today, for no particular reason, we want to talk about the importance of privacy.”

Mac, the creator of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, follows up: “Specifically, how to prevent spies from seeing what you’re doing.”

The pair continue the joke while discussing online privacy, with Reynolds pretending to search for “how to run a football club.” They then stress that privacy matters to people everywhere, specifically mentioning Middlesbrough, Oxford and Ipswich.

Reynolds closes the clip by declaring: “Refreshing, huh? An organisation that actually respects your privacy.”

The minute-long video ends with the pair looking at a phone that supposedly shows Southampton’s pickleball team during a training session, adding another layer to the joke.

On the pitch, Wrexham head into the weekend sitting 19th in the Championship after seven matches. Southampton are ninth with 10 points, having recovered from their points deduction.
