Tonda Eckert faces anxious wait for FA punishment decision as Southampton director quits

Southampton and head coach Tonda Eckert are approaching a potentially decisive moment, with the Football Association expected to deliver its verdict on the German coach’s alleged involvement in last season’s training-ground spying controversy.

According to talkSPORT, Southampton are anticipating a final decision from the FA during the upcoming international break, following their remaining fixture against Wrexham.

The club has already faced punishment from the EFL after being found guilty of spying on three opponents, including Middlesbrough. Southampton were removed from the playoff final and began the current campaign with a four-point deduction.

However, the FA opened a separate investigation into Eckert personally. The 33-year-old was charged with misconduct in July, but the specific punishment has yet to be announced.

With no clear precedent for the case, speculation has ranged from a lengthy ban from football in the UK to a touchline suspension or financial penalty. Southampton will be hoping for a proportionate outcome, particularly given the club’s encouraging start at St Mary’s.

The Saints have won all four of their home league matches this season, scoring 15 goals. New arrivals Daniel Peretz and Cyle Larin have made an immediate impact, with Larin emerging as one of the Championship’s leading scorers. Keven Schlotterbeck and James Ward-Prowse have also helped ease concerns following the departures of Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Shea Charles.

Their away form has been less convincing. Southampton lost to Watford on the opening weekend before drawing with Birmingham City and Lincoln City, leaving them still searching for their first away victory.

The club’s focus now turns to Wrexham, with the FA decision reportedly expected shortly afterwards.

Southampton hoping for a proportionate outcome

From Southampton’s perspective, there is a belief that the club and Eckert have already paid a significant price for last season’s misconduct.

While the German coach may still face an individual sanction, the club is expected to favour a punishment that reflects the circumstances rather than an extreme suspension.

Eckert has previously acknowledged that he was not fully familiar with every regulation when he replaced Will Still in November last year. He has since said he spent the summer studying the rules ahead of the new campaign.

A short touchline ban would allow the matter to be resolved without significantly disrupting Southampton’s progress. However, reports suggest that a lengthy suspension could force club owner Solak to reconsider Eckert’s position.

That would leave Southampton facing a difficult decision just months into the season, potentially requiring them to find a new manager capable of maintaining their promotion challenge.

The club will also have a major south-coast derby against Portsmouth waiting after the international break, adding further importance to the timing of the FA’s decision.

Whatever the outcome, Southampton and Eckert are expecting clarity following the Wrexham fixture.

Meanwhile, the club has also seen a change behind the scenes, with director Rasmus Ankersen resigning from his role. The 42-year-old has increasingly focused on sister club Goztepe in recent years but remains a co-owner of Southampton through Sport Republic.
