Fresh Spygate development emerges after Birmingham City draw with Southampton

Southampton officials are reportedly unhappy with the conduct of EFL chairman Rick Parry during the club’s recent Championship meeting with Birmingham City.

According to a report by Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail, Parry attended the fixture at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park on September 1, when Southampton played out a 1-1 draw with Chris Davies’ Birmingham side.

The match took place against the backdrop of the ongoing Spygate controversy, which has continued to overshadow Southampton after the club’s involvement in a training-ground spying scandal during the final stages of the 2025/26 Championship season.

Southampton were removed from the Championship play-offs despite defeating Middlesbrough over two legs in the semi-finals. The decision followed revelations that members of the club’s analysis team had observed training sessions involving Middlesbrough, Ipswich Town and Oxford United.

Head coach Tonda Eckert has since been charged by the Football Association under Rule E3.1, while Southampton began the new campaign with a four-point deduction. That deficit has already been erased following the club’s positive start to the season.

However, with Eckert’s future still uncertain and the FA case yet to be resolved, the latest report has added another layer to the controversy.

According to the report, the EFL chairman allegedly did not speak with members of the Southampton delegation during the evening and instead spent time conversing with Birmingham representatives.

Sources at the EFL reportedly suggested that Parry had not noticed the Southampton officials. However, Daily Echo journalist Alfie House appeared to support the substance of the report, describing it as a poor look for the governing body.

The claims have since sparked a reaction among Southampton supporters, many of whom believe the incident creates an uncomfortable impression while the club remains involved in an ongoing disciplinary case.
