Celtic eye January move for Liverpool defender Luke Chambers

Celtic are reportedly considering a January move for Liverpool left-back Luke Chambers, with a temporary deal potentially on the table.

According to transfer reporter Alan Nixon, Liverpool could be willing to send Chambers out on loan when the transfer window reopens after the defender remained at Anfield during the summer as part of their squad depth.

The 22-year-old already has experience of Scottish football, having previously enjoyed a spell with Kilmarnock.

Chambers joined the Ayrshire club on loan in January 2023 and immediately made an impression, providing the assist for Kilmarnock’s winning goal on his senior debut against Dundee United.

Then-Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes was impressed with what he saw, praising Chambers’ attitude and maturity after his first appearance.

The defender subsequently returned to Liverpool and made his senior debut later that year. He came off the bench during Liverpool’s League Cup victory over Leicester City before being handed his first start in the Europa League against Toulouse. Liverpool have since continued to use loan spells to provide him with regular senior experience, including periods with Wigan Athletic and Charlton Athletic.

Chambers was also part of England’s Under-19 squad that won the European Championship in 2022, but breaking into Liverpool’s first-team setup on a permanent basis has proved difficult.

Celtic’s left-back situation

A move to Celtic could therefore offer Chambers another opportunity to play regular first-team football while providing Martin O’Neill with additional competition at left-back.

The position has already presented some problems for Celtic this season. Kieran Tierney has missed matches through injury, while summer signing Landon Emenalo arrived at the club while still recovering from an injury.

Despite those concerns, another left-back does not currently appear to be an obvious January priority for Celtic.

However, Nixon’s report suggests Chambers could be viewed differently because of his age, previous experience in Scotland and potential availability on loan.

Liverpool’s willingness to allow him to leave temporarily could give Celtic an opportunity to assess the defender at close quarters before deciding whether a longer-term deal would be worthwhile. Liverpool have previously used loan moves to help Chambers continue his development, with the club confirming his temporary switch to Charlton in January 2026.
