How Rangers could line up against Motherwell

Derek McInnes faces several decisions ahead of Rangers’ Premiership meeting with Motherwell at Ibrox on Saturday.

Rangers have responded to their disappointing European exit with consecutive away wins over Aberdeen and Falkirk. Neither performance was particularly convincing, but collecting points has been vital after their Conference League play-off defeat to Jablonec.

The next challenge could be more demanding. Motherwell famously won 3-2 at Ibrox in Rangers’ final home fixture of last season, a result that helped trigger the collapse of their title challenge.

The Steelmen have continued to favour a possession-heavy style under Alfred Johansson, who has largely maintained the approach that brought success during Jens Berthel Askou’s reign.

With that in mind, McInnes may consider making two adjustments to his side. Here is our predicted Rangers XI in a 4-3-3 formation.

GK — Ivor Pandur

Pandur has provided Rangers with a reliable presence between the posts since arriving. The goalkeeper has already made several important interventions to prevent difficult situations from becoming costly.

RB — Ross McCrorie

McCrorie could be rewarded for his contribution against Falkirk. His neat footwork and well-weighted pass created the opportunity for Rangers’ winning goal, giving him a strong case to start.

CB — Emmanuel Fernandez

Fernandez has endured some difficult moments this season, particularly when attempting to play out from the back. However, with Rangers short of alternatives in central defence, he is expected to retain his place.

CB — Olwethu Makhanya

Makhanya continues to show the qualities of a promising central defender. He is composed in his defensive work and has also demonstrated a willingness to carry the ball forward when space opens up.

LB — James Penrice

Penrice is likely to remain at left-back while Tuur Rommens completes his recovery from injury. The summer arrival has taken advantage of his opportunity and currently appears ahead of his teammate in the pecking order.

CM — Nicolas Raskin

Raskin attracted significant transfer interest during the window, but his immediate future now lies at Ibrox. His energy, technical ability and influence in midfield could make him one of Rangers’ most important players this season.

CM — Dan Neil

Neil was left out of the squad for the trip to Falkirk and could return to the starting lineup against Motherwell. The former Sunderland midfielder has yet to produce his best form since moving to Rangers, but he has the ability to make a greater impact.

AM — Kim Min-su

Kim Min-su has quickly emerged as one of Rangers’ most exciting summer recruits. He has impressed in his early appearances and was unfortunate not to score in either of them.

RW — Findlay Curtis

Curtis has started both of Rangers’ last two matches and looked lively in each. McInnes will want the winger to continue showing the quality and attacking threat he displayed during his loan spell at Kilmarnock last season.

LW — Djeidi Gassama

Gassama can be unpredictable, but he has recently produced a series of energetic performances. The main thing missing from his game has been a decisive final contribution.

ST — Lawrence Shankland

Shankland is the obvious choice to lead the line after scoring three goals in his last two matches. His left-footed double against Falkirk demonstrated exactly why Rangers brought him to the club.
