Celtic make late move for Justin Devenny as Crystal Palace loan deal emerges

Celtic have made a late approach for Crystal Palace midfielder Justin Devenny as they continue to work on their squad in the final hours of the summer transfer window.

The Scottish club are understood to have submitted a loan proposal for the Northern Ireland international, who could be available to leave Selhurst Park before the deadline.

Devenny has yet to feature competitively for Palace this season and appears to have fallen down the pecking order under manager Pierre Sage. The 22-year-old has also been left out of the matchday squad for several recent fixtures.

His situation is a significant change from last season, when Devenny made 32 appearances across all competitions, scoring twice and registering one assist.

Celtic’s interest could therefore provide the midfielder with an opportunity to revive his playing time, while the Hoops would add another option to their midfield.

Journalist Alan Nixon reports that Celtic have lodged an offer to take Devenny on loan for the remainder of the season.

Palace are believed to be willing to consider a permanent sale for around £7 million, although no club has yet met their valuation.

With the asking price proving difficult to reach, Celtic could see a temporary deal as a more realistic route to securing the player.

However, they are not alone in their interest, with Serie A side Cagliari also reportedly keen on Devenny.

The timing could become important. If Palace are determined to reduce their squad before the window closes, they may have to decide whether accepting a loan represents the best available solution.

Celtic still want midfield reinforcements

Celtic have already been working on strengthening the centre of the pitch this summer.

The club recently made an approach for PSV Eindhoven midfielder Joel van den Berg, with reports suggesting that negotiations have progressed to the point where a medical has been arranged.

Even with van den Berg seemingly close to joining, Celtic are continuing to explore further midfield options.

The need for additional quality in that area has been heightened by Arne Engels’ departure for West Ham United, leaving Martin O’Neill keen to add greater depth and competition.

Celtic are also working on strengthening between the posts. An agreement has reportedly been reached for Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who is expected in Scotland for his medical.

With the deadline rapidly approaching, Celtic could therefore have several pieces of late transfer business still to complete.
