Celtic step up pursuit of Gvidas Gineitis as Torino midfielder’s price revealed
Gvidas Gineitis price drop could boost Celtic’s hopes of completing Torino transfer
Celtic’s chances of signing Gvidas Gineitis could depend heavily on how much Torino are willing to demand for the midfielder before the transfer window closes.
The Hoops have maintained an interest in the Lithuania international throughout the summer, but their pursuit has now accelerated as they look to strengthen their midfield options.
Torino had previously placed a valuation of approximately £10 million on the 22-year-old. However, there is now growing belief that the Serie A side could be prepared to reduce that figure, potentially giving Celtic a much better opportunity to complete a deal.
The development would come as welcome news for Martin O’Neill, particularly after Arne Engels departed Celtic Park for West Ham in a £22 million transfer.
Gineitis has emerged as one of the players Celtic view as capable of helping fill the void left by the Belgian, and the Scottish champions are understood to have already returned with an improved proposal for his services.
There are encouraging indications from Italy too, with Torino reportedly exploring options to replace Gineitis. Their search for another midfielder could suggest the club are beginning to prepare for the possibility that the Lithuanian leaves before the deadline.
That situation could work strongly in Celtic’s favour as they continue their efforts to reshape the midfield.
The club are already making progress on another addition, with PSV midfielder Joel van den Berg undergoing his medical. However, Gineitis could offer another dimension, bringing additional experience and quality while also retaining considerable room for development at just 22.
