Rangers’ pursuit of Venezuelan striker Kevin Kelsy has resulted in one of the biggest deals of the Scottish summer transfer window, with the Ibrox club agreeing a package worth approximately $13 million (£9.5m) with Portland Timbers.

The agreement is understood to contain additional performance-based payments, while Portland have also retained a sell-on interest in the forward.

However, before Kelsy could complete his move to Scotland, his journey included an unexpected stop in San Francisco. The visit was connected to the administrative side of his transfer rather than any football-related matter.

Why Kelsy travelled to San Francisco

Kelsy was still based in the United States after spending his previous spell with Portland Timbers. As a result, his move to Scotland required him to complete the necessary procedures connected with an international transfer and his move into the United Kingdom.

Rangers had increased their offer significantly after Portland initially resisted the idea of selling their striker. The improved proposal eventually convinced the MLS club to agree to the transfer, with the deal reportedly reaching $13m before bonuses.

That meant Kelsy had to take care of the relevant formalities before he could make the final journey to Glasgow and begin life as a Rangers player.

Rangers moved quickly for Kelsy

The transfer emerged towards the closing stages of the summer window, with Rangers increasingly determined to strengthen their options in attack.

Derek McInnes’ need for another striker became even greater after Youssef Chermiti suffered an ACL injury, leaving the manager with fewer recognised options in the central attacking position.

Kelsy quickly became a prominent target following his productive spell in Major League Soccer.

Portland had signed the striker from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2025 for roughly $6m, but his performances in America subsequently saw his value rise considerably.

During his time with the Timbers, Kelsy scored 16 goals in 43 appearances, establishing himself as an important attacking player for the MLS outfit.

Why Rangers invested so much money

Rangers’ willingness to commit such a sizeable fee reflects the belief that Kelsy can make a significant impact at Ibrox.

McInnes had already strengthened his attacking options during the summer, with players such as Daisuke Yokota arriving and Kim Min-su also joining the squad. However, Chermiti’s injury created another gap that needed to be addressed.

Kelsy provides a different physical profile.

Standing at approximately 1.93 metres, the Venezuelan gives Rangers an imposing presence up front. His size should allow him to compete effectively against defenders, attack aerial deliveries and provide a focal point for the team’s attacking play.

His previous experience across Venezuela, Ukraine and MLS also means he has already experienced several different styles of football despite his relatively young age.

Kelsy’s journey before moving to Rangers

Kelsy’s career has developed at a rapid pace.

He started his senior career in Venezuela before earning a move to Europe with Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023. His time in Ukraine gave him exposure to European football, including a memorable Champions League goal against Porto.

He later moved to the United States and spent time with FC Cincinnati before Portland completed his permanent signing in January 2025.

The Timbers’ initial investment of around $6m has now effectively been doubled by the Rangers agreement, highlighting how much Kelsy’s reputation and market value increased during his time in MLS.

That growth in value helps explain why Portland were initially reluctant to let him leave.

When can Kelsy play for Rangers?

The final stages of the transfer involved more than simply agreeing a fee between the two clubs.

Kelsy needed to complete his medical examination and visa-related formalities before being officially cleared to join the Rangers squad.

Those procedures meant that he was not expected to be immediately available for Rangers’ next fixture, giving him little time to settle into McInnes’ plans before making his debut.

Once the paperwork is completed, the focus will switch towards integrating him into the Rangers setup.

What Kelsy could bring to McInnes’ team

Rangers will hope the Venezuelan can provide an immediate solution to their need for greater attacking threat.

His physical strength, height and ability to operate as a traditional centre-forward could give McInnes an alternative approach when facing teams that defend deep.

Kelsy can potentially:

• provide a physical focal point in attack;
• occupy opposing centre-backs;
• attack crosses and set-piece deliveries;
• hold the ball up for advancing teammates;
• provide greater presence inside the penalty area;
• contribute goals after establishing himself in the side.

His record in MLS suggests he has already demonstrated a capacity to find the net regularly.

The challenge will be adapting that form to Scottish football, where the physical demands and tactical environment will be different.

A significant opportunity for Kelsy

The transfer also represents an important stage in Kelsy’s own career.

After developing in Venezuela, gaining European experience with Shakhtar and building his reputation in MLS, the Rangers move gives him another opportunity to establish himself in European football.

At only 22, there is also considerable scope for further development.

Rangers will not simply be hoping for short-term production. The size and structure of the transfer indicate that the club see Kelsy as someone capable of becoming a major attacking asset over the coming seasons.

What the deal means for Portland

Portland are also set to benefit significantly from the agreement.

The Timbers paid around $6m to sign Kelsy permanently in 2025 and have now secured a package worth roughly $13mfrom Rangers, before any additional bonuses.

The sell-on provision also gives Portland the possibility of receiving further money if Kelsy is transferred again in the future.

From the MLS club’s perspective, it represents a substantial return on their original investment.

The bigger picture

Kelsy’s brief stop in San Francisco was ultimately part of the logistical process required to complete his move from the United States to Scotland.

The transfer itself is a major statement from Rangers, who have committed around $13m to a young striker following his impressive period with Portland.

For McInnes, the signing addresses an immediate squad requirement created by Chermiti’s injury while giving Rangers another physically imposing option in the final third.

For Kelsy, meanwhile, it represents the next major step in a rapidly developing career.

Rangers will now be hoping that the striker can reproduce his scoring form from MLS in Scotland and quickly become the attacking focal point McInnes believes he can be.
