Celtic keeping tabs on Europa League-winning midfielder Yves Bissouma

Celtic have reportedly joined the clubs monitoring Yves Bissouma as the midfielder considers his next move following his departure from Tottenham Hotspur.

Mauritanian journalist Lassana Camara claims that the Scottish champions are keeping a close eye on Bissouma’s situation, with Ajax and Turkish side İstanbul Başakşehir also said to be interested in the Mali international.

Bissouma is currently a free agent after leaving Tottenham, meaning he can negotiate with clubs without a transfer fee being involved. With the summer window approaching its conclusion, several European sides are believed to be assessing the possibility of bringing the experienced midfielder on board.

The 29-year-old spent several seasons in the Premier League, first establishing himself at Brighton & Hove Albion after arriving in England in 2018. His performances eventually earned him a move to Tottenham in 2022 for a reported £30 million.

During his time in north London, Bissouma made more than 200 Premier League appearances across his spells with Spurs and Brighton. He was also part of the Tottenham side that lifted the Europa League under former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou.

Before moving to England, Bissouma developed his reputation in France with Lille. At international level, he has earned around 50 caps for Mali and was involved in their run to the 2016 Africa Cup of Nations final.

The midfielder’s physical strength, composure in possession and ability to operate directly in front of the defence could make him an attractive option for Celtic. That position has been an area where the Glasgow club have been looking for greater quality and experience.

Celtic’s reported pursuit of Gvidas Gineitis appears to have become increasingly difficult because of the financial demands involved, potentially opening the door to an alternative such as Bissouma.

However, although the fact that Bissouma is available without a transfer fee could appeal to Celtic, his wage demands could make any potential agreement more complicated.

There is also a need for caution surrounding the latest report. Celtic are frequently linked with players by transfer reporters, particularly during the final stages of a window, and this latest claim alone does not necessarily indicate that formal negotiations are taking place.

For now, Bissouma appears to have several options available, with Celtic, Ajax and Başakşehir among the clubs reportedly keeping tabs on his future.
