Cardiff City close in on Krystian Bielik deal as Brian Barry-Murphy strengthens injury-hit defence

Cardiff City are reportedly close to completing a permanent move for West Bromwich Albion defender Krystian Bielik, giving manager Brian Barry-Murphy a much-needed boost at the back.

The Bluebirds are believed to be nearing an agreement for the experienced Poland international, who is expected to put pen to paper on a multi-year contract at Cardiff City Stadium.

Bielik, 28, offers plenty of versatility because he can play both in central defence and midfield. That flexibility could prove particularly valuable to Barry-Murphy, whose squad has been stretched by a growing list of injuries.

The defender joined West Brom last summer after leaving Birmingham City when his contract expired. He made 17 Championship appearances during the 2025/26 campaign but was unable to establish himself as a regular starter at The Hawthorns.

His situation has remained similar at the beginning of the new season, with Bielik starting both of West Brom’s opening league fixtures on the bench. He was introduced for the final minute of their first game against Norwich City.

Cardiff’s need for defensive reinforcements

has become increasingly obvious. Callum Chambers has been unavailable, while Gabriel Osho is still working towards a return following a knee injury.

The problem was highlighted during Tuesday’s 2-1 Carabao Cup loss to Norwich. With Cardiff’s options stretched, 15-year-old Noah Anyadike was handed his senior debut before being forced off with cramp.

Bielik’s expected arrival would therefore provide Barry-Murphy with a significant injection of experience and depth as Cardiff attempt to complete more business before the transfer deadline next Tuesday.

The move also comes after the Cardiff boss acknowledged that he expected the club to be extremely active during the closing days of the window.

Before the Norwich defeat, Cardiff had only completed one new senior signing in Jack Moylan. They had also welcomed back Nathan Trott and Calum Scanlon, but Barry-Murphy had been hoping to have another addition available for the Carabao Cup fixture.

Following the defeat, the manager was asked how busy he expected Cardiff to be before deadline day. With his fingers crossed, Barry-Murphy simply replied: “Hopefully, very.”

He was also questioned about whether the player he had expected to arrive before the Norwich match could still complete a transfer.

“I hope so,” the manager responded.

When asked if he expected a signing to be completed by Thursday, Barry-Murphy again expressed optimism.

“I would certainly hope so,” he said. “I was pretty sure we’d have somebody in today, so hopefully that’ll be the case by Thursday.”

The manager previously explained that Cardiff’s relatively slow progress in the transfer market was partly because the club were being careful about the profiles of players they wanted to recruit.

Barry-Murphy also made it clear that the club still had room within its finances to strengthen and explained that owner Vincent Tan was not directly involved in every transfer conversation.

He said the club would approach Tan when necessary rather than involving him in every day-to-day decision, while also expressing gratitude for the backing Cardiff had received.

The expected signing of Bielik would give Cardiff an experienced player who understands English football well.

Bielik began his professional career with Legia Warsaw before moving to Arsenal in 2015. Although he never made a senior appearance for the Gunners, he gained valuable experience through loan spells with Birmingham City, Walsall and Charlton Athletic.

His most productive period came at Charlton during the 2018/19 season, when he made 31 appearances and scored three goals.

Now, with Cardiff in need of defensive depth, Bielik could provide Barry-Murphy with an experienced and adaptable option capable of filling more than one position.
