Tonda Eckert explains why Taylor Harwood-Bellis was left out of Southampton squad vs Stoke
Southampton boss Tonda Eckert has backed Taylor Harwood-Bellis after leaving the defender out of the squad for Saturday’s 3-1 Championship win over Stoke City amid reported interest from Aston Villa.
Harwood-Bellis has emerged as a target for the Premier League club, leaving the 24-year-old facing an uncertain future at St Mary’s. Eckert acknowledged the difficult position his player finds himself in but stressed that the decision to omit him was entirely his own.

“He’s a 24-year-old man, and he has given absolutely everything to this club over the last season,” Eckert said.
“He loves this club and his teammates, but at the same time, an offer has come in.”
Eckert also made it clear that Harwood-Bellis should not be blamed for the situation, insisting that he alone was responsible for the decision to leave him out against Stoke.
“We decided to put our full trust in the players who were on the pitch, and I think they repaid that trust,” he added.
“I don’t put any blame on him. Ultimately, it’s always my decision. I’m very pleased for everyone who played today, but there’s more to consider as well. For today, that was the decision, and when you win, you’re always right.”
Asked if Southampton would need to find a replacement should Harwood-Bellis leave before the September 1 deadline, Eckert insisted that the defender remains a Southampton player.
“Taylor is still a Southampton player,” he said.
“Every stage of the season brings different challenges, and there’s no question about Taylor’s quality as a footballer. Obviously, you can have thoughts about what it would be like to play Champions League football, and if you find yourself in that position…”
