Hedges Sends Blackburn Rovers Message Following Derby County Move
Ryan Hedges has officially closed the chapter on his five-year spell with Blackburn Rovers after completing a move to Derby County.
The Welsh winger became a free agent when his Rovers contract expired at the end of the season and subsequently spent time training with Derby. He has now agreed a one-year contract with the Rams, linking up once again with manager John Eustace.
Hedges used social media to pay tribute to Blackburn and everyone who supported him during his time at Ewood Park.
Reflecting on his five seasons with the club, the 29-year-old expressed his gratitude to his teammates, coaches, managers, medical staff and other members of the backroom team who helped him develop both professionally and personally.
He also reserved special praise for Blackburn supporters, saying it had been a privilege to represent the club and thanking them for their backing throughout his time in Lancashire.
Eustace, meanwhile, believes Hedges can provide Derby with valuable versatility as the club deals with a number of injuries early in the campaign.
The Derby boss described his new signing as an excellent character and a player capable of making a significant contribution at Championship level. He highlighted Hedges’ ability to operate in several positions, including left-back, wing-back and either flank in an attacking role.
Eustace’s previous relationship with Hedges also played a part, having worked with him before, although the Derby manager stressed that familiarity alone was never enough to justify a signing.
Instead, he believes Hedges’ versatility will give Derby additional solutions while several players remain unavailable through injury. His positive attitude and ability to quickly settle into the squad have also impressed the manager.
Hedges had initially hoped to extend his stay with Blackburn after five years at Ewood Park, but discussions over a new contract failed to progress. That opened the door for Derby to secure his services and reunite him with Eustace ahead of what promises to be another demanding Championship campaign.
