John Eustace rues two sloppy moments as Derby County suffer Charlton defeat

John Eustace admitted Derby County were punished by two “sloppy” defensive moments as they began their Championship campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic.

Derby went into half-time ahead after Sam Szmodics produced another impressive finish to score his second goal in as many matches.

However, Charlton responded strongly after the break, with Lloyd Jones heading home the equaliser before Tyreece Campbell completed the comeback with 10 minutes remaining.

Eustace frustrated by Derby’s defending

Eustace felt there was little between the two teams but was disappointed that Derby failed to protect their lead.

“I was really disappointed to lose,” the Derby boss said.

“I didn’t think there was much in the game. I thought we limited Charlton to no chances, really, so the two goals that we conceded were really sloppy from a defensive point of view.”

He felt Derby could have prevented the opening goal by dealing with the cross better, while the second goal came after his side failed to maintain its defensive shape following an attack.

“There was a little lack of communication,” Eustace explained, insisting his players must improve defensively if they are to pick up points consistently.

Defensive changes made Derby’s task harder

Derby were forced into a change at the back, with Matt Clarke missing the match because of a calf problem.

Craig Forsyth stepped into central defence, while new signing Charlie Taylor made his first senior appearance for the club following his move from Southampton.

Eustace acknowledged that the defensive unit was still adapting, with the back five playing together for the first time.

He also praised 38-year-old Forsyth for his contribution despite the difficult circumstances.

“There were some tired legs in there,” Eustace added, while praising the effort and attitude shown by his squad.

Despite the disappointing result, Eustace will now look for Derby to respond quickly as they continue their Championship campaign.
