Martin O’Neill confirms Celtic interest in Landon Emenalo with latest transfer update

Martin O’Neill has confirmed Celtic’s interest in Chelsea youngster Landon Emenalo and admitted he would like to bring the highly-rated defender to Parkhead.

However, the potential move remains unresolved, with Emenalo currently recovering from an injury and competition from other clubs also complicating Celtic’s pursuit.

Speaking to CelticPlayer on Friday, O’Neill was asked whether Emenalo was among the players Celtic were making progress with.

The Celtic manager was quick to praise the youngster and made it clear that he sees the Chelsea prospect as someone who could strengthen his squad.

“I think he’s a really fine young player,” O’Neill said.

The manager also explained why Celtic are looking to strengthen at left-back, with Kieran Tierney currently their main senior option in the position.

O’Neill highlighted Tierney’s return to form last season after his previous injury problems, but believes additional cover is required.

“And this young man has definitely got talent,” he added.

However, Emenalo’s current injury means Celtic will have to wait before making a final decision.

“He’s got a bit of an injury at the moment. We’re hoping that that will clear up shortly. And if it does, and I think it will, I’d love to have him. If that’s the case.”

The comments represent O’Neill’s clearest public confirmation yet that Celtic are seriously interested in the Chelsea youngster.

They also provide an explanation for why the proposed transfer has not yet been completed.

Celtic will want to be satisfied that Emenalo has fully recovered before committing to the deal, while interest from elsewhere means the Hoops cannot afford to take their pursuit for granted.

For now, there is no final agreement in place, and several factors still need to fall into place before Emenalo can become a Celtic player.

Nevertheless, O’Neill’s latest comments make one thing clear: Celtic want the Chelsea youngster, and the manager would welcome him to Parkhead if his injury clears and the remaining obstacles can be overcome.
