Rangers open talks for Kevin Kelsy as striker search intensifies after Chermiti injury

Rangers have opened initial discussions with Portland Timbers over a potential move for striker Kevin Kelsy as they search for a replacement for the injured Youssef Chermiti.

The Light Blues have endured a difficult opening to the campaign, suffering Europa League qualifying defeat to Jagiellonia Bialystok before drawing their first two Scottish Premiership fixtures against Dundee United and Hibernian.

Their problems were compounded by the news that Chermiti is expected to miss the remainder of the season after suffering an ACL rupture during the meeting with Hibs.

With the transfer deadline approaching on September 1, Rangers are now exploring several possibilities to strengthen their attacking options.

According to Rangers Review journalist Chris Jack, the Ibrox club have made contact with MLS side Portland Timbers regarding a potential deal for Kelsy.

The 22-year-old Venezuela international has impressed in Major League Soccer this season, scoring nine goals in 17 appearances for Portland.

However, Rangers are likely to face a significant financial hurdle if they want to bring the forward to Scotland before the window closes.

Kelsy is understood to be one of several strikers under consideration, with Rangers exploring both permanent transfers and loan opportunities.

New manager Derek McInnes has already added Lawrence Shankland to his squad this summer, but Chermiti’s injury has left the club needing further attacking reinforcements.

The Albanian striker had been expected to play a major role this season after finishing as Rangers’ leading scorer last campaign. His importance was highlighted by Galatasaray’s reported £22 million offer, which the club rejected shortly before the injury blow.

Rangers have already explored other options.

Sheffield United forward Ryan One was reportedly on their radar, but discussions stalled after the English club rejected a loan-to-buy proposal. There has also been interest in former Rangers academy striker Rory Wilson, who is currently with Aston Villa.

Kelsy, however, appears to fit the profile Rangers are looking for.

The Venezuelan has previously spent time with Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Cincinnati, but his spell in Portland has provided the clearest indication of his potential.

His physical presence, pace and direct style could make him a suitable replacement for the qualities Chermiti would have brought to McInnes’ attack.

With Rangers needing to react quickly to a major injury setback, Kelsy’s name is now firmly on their list as the club assesses the best way to strengthen before the transfer deadline.
