West Brom fans react to latest Daryl Dike training footage at Orlando City

Daryl Dike’s departure from West Bromwich Albion was arguably one of the more difficult exits for supporters to accept this summer, particularly because of the difficult circumstances that defined his four years at the club.

The American striker arrived at The Hawthorns from Orlando City in January 2022 for a reported £7 million, joining with a strong reputation and plenty of expectations. Unfortunately, his time in England was repeatedly disrupted by serious injuries, preventing him from establishing the consistency he would have wanted.

Dike’s first half-season with Albion was particularly frustrating. After making only two appearances, he suffered a hamstring problem during his home debut against Peterborough United, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign.

The following season brought another setback when a thigh injury kept him out for 19 matches. However, under Carlos Corberan, Dike finally managed to enjoy an extended run in the side, featuring in 22 consecutive games and scoring seven goals.

His progress was then cruelly interrupted by two separate Achilles tendon ruptures across that season and the next. Those injuries severely limited his availability and meant he did not make a sustained return to first-team football until February 2025, by which time Albion’s promotion hopes had faded.

Dike’s injury problems continued into the following campaign. A thigh issue suffered during training ruled him out of the opening nine matches, and when he eventually returned, he found himself down the pecking order.

During Ryan Mason’s six-month spell in charge, Dike played just seven times and accumulated only 31 minutes of Championship football. Mason preferred other attacking options, while Eric Ramsay also showed little faith in the American during his brief spell in charge.

Despite another frustrating season, Dike managed to finish his West Brom career on a positive note. Under interim boss James Morrison, he remained fit for a prolonged period and played an important role in Albion’s battle for Championship survival, scoring valuable goals against Watford and Preston North End.

Even so, West Brom decided against offering him a new contract when his deal expired. While many supporters wanted to see the striker given another opportunity, the club ultimately opted not to take another risk on his fitness after such a difficult injury history.

During his West Brom career, Dike made 68 league appearances, scoring 11 goals and providing three assists across 2,466 minutes.

Dike makes an immediate impact back at Orlando

After leaving West Brom, Dike returned to Orlando City on a free transfer, and recent footage from his new surroundings has caught the attention of his former supporters.

The striker recently rediscovered his goalscoring touch during Orlando’s Leagues Cup meeting with Atlético de San Luis. He opened the scoring shortly after the half-hour mark by reacting quickest to a rebound after Tiago’s header had been saved by goalkeeper Manuel Lajud.

The goal marked Dike’s first since returning to Orlando and his 20th goal for the club in all competitions. Orlando eventually progressed after the match finished 2-2, winning 5-3 on penalties.

Given the affection Dike developed among Albion supporters during his time at the club, his return to the scoresheet was met with plenty of positive reactions.

Fans praised the striker’s determination and expressed their happiness at seeing him enjoying football again after years of injury problems. Some supporters also admitted they would have preferred West Brom to retain him and give him another opportunity to demonstrate what he could do when fully fit.

That reaction highlights how highly Dike was regarded despite his struggles. His physical presence, commitment and ability were never really questioned; the major issue was simply whether he could remain healthy long enough to consistently demonstrate those qualities.

A fresh start could be exactly what Dike needs

Dike’s West Brom story ultimately became one of unrealised potential. There were glimpses of the powerful Championship striker supporters believed they were getting when he arrived, but injuries repeatedly prevented him from building momentum.

His productive spell with Barnsley had already demonstrated that he could be a dangerous second-tier forward, while his late-season contributions for West Brom showed that he could still make a difference when given a sustained run.

From Albion’s perspective, declining to renew his contract was understandable given his injury record. However, Dike’s return to Orlando gives him an opportunity to rebuild his career in familiar surroundings.

His latest goal will hopefully be the beginning of a much more consistent period for the American striker. West Brom supporters may no longer see him in their colours, but his efforts during his time at The Hawthorns have clearly left a lasting impression, and many will continue to follow his progress from afar.
