Celtic close in on Baur as summer recruitment gathers pace

Celtic are reportedly on the verge of completing the signing of midfielder Baur from Paderborn, with the player expected to travel to Glasgow to finalise the move.

The transfer would make him Martin O’Neill’s fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Camilo Duran and Kasper Hogh.

According to reports, the deal brings an end to lengthy negotiations between Celtic and Paderborn. The German club had initially placed a valuation of around £7 million on the 22-year-old, who had just one year remaining on his contract.

Baur has been keen on making the move to Scotland and has already agreed personal terms on a four-year contract with the Scottish champions. His arrival could also have implications for the future of Reo Hatate, with speculation continuing over the midfielder’s position at Celtic.

Celtic continue to strengthen squad

The Hoops are not expected to stop their recruitment after securing Baur.

Celtic are reportedly working towards a loan agreement for a new left-back and remain interested in bringing in another goalkeeper before the transfer window closes.

At the same time, the club are determined to keep Alistair Johnston despite reported interest from Everton. Celtic are understood to value the right-back highly and would only consider allowing him to leave if an offer exceeding £15 million arrives.

Arne Engels remains on West Ham’s radar

More movement could also occur in the opposite direction, with West Ham expected to make another attempt to sign Belgian midfielder Arne Engels.

The Premier League club could reportedly return with an improved proposal worth close to £25 million, potentially giving Celtic another major transfer decision to make.

For now, however, Baur’s expected arrival represents another important step in Celtic’s summer recruitment.

The midfielder is joining at an important time, with Celtic preparing for their Champions League play-off first leg against LASK Linz next week. His addition should provide O’Neill with another midfield option as the club prepares for one of the most important fixtures of the early season.
