Julien Stephan Confirms QPR Trio Available for Portsmouth Opener

QPR manager Julien Stephan has delivered a positive injury update ahead of Saturday’s Championship opener against Portsmouth, confirming that Jonathan Varane, Paul Smyth and Rumarn Burrell are all expected to be available.

The trio picked up minor knocks during QPR’s EFL Cup meeting with Millwall last time out, but none of the injuries have proved serious enough to rule them out of the trip to Fratton Park.

QPR began their competitive campaign against Millwall at Loftus Road, with the game finishing 1-1 after 90 minutes. The tie eventually went to penalties, where Millwall prevailed 2-0 after goalkeeper Lukas Jensen remarkably saved all four of QPR’s attempts.

Although the result was disappointing for Stephan’s side, the manager was able to take encouragement from the performance as attention quickly shifted towards the Championship.

Positive QPR injury news before Portsmouth

QPR now face a challenging opening-day trip to Portsmouth, with Stephan’s squad looking to make an early statement after an encouraging pre-season.

The R’s scored plenty of goals during their preparations and will now discover how well that form translates into a competitive Championship fixture. Portsmouth are traditionally difficult to beat at Fratton Park, making Saturday’s contest a demanding first test.

However, QPR have received a welcome boost on the fitness front.

Reporter Jon Harland confirmed after speaking with Stephan that Varane, Burrell and Smyth are all fit to feature. Their issues against Millwall were described as minor problems rather than significant injuries.

Smyth and Burrell were both substituted during the second half against Millwall, while Varane came off the bench and completed the match.

There was also positive news concerning other members of the squad. Kieran Morgan is expected to return before the September international break, while Obikwu has resumed training. Stephan also confirmed that the remainder of his squad is currently fit.

QPR can approach Portsmouth with confidence

Having the three players available gives Stephan considerably more flexibility for the opening league fixture.

QPR endured a difficult Championship campaign last season, finishing 15th after recording 16 victories, 10 draws and 20 defeats from their 46 matches. They accumulated 58 points and ended the campaign with a negative goal difference of 12.

The club will be hoping for significant improvement this time around.

Stephan has overseen the development of a relatively young and ambitious squad, and his experience from his first season in English football should help him identify the areas that need improvement.

A visit to Portsmouth will provide a stern examination, but there is no reason for QPR to travel without confidence. With most of their squad available, the R’s have the quality to compete for a positive result.

More additions could still be required

Despite the encouraging injury update, QPR may still need to strengthen before the transfer window closes.

The importance of squad depth becomes particularly obvious when several players are unavailable. Had Varane, Burrell and Smyth all been ruled out, Stephan would have been left with noticeably fewer options.

The Championship’s demanding schedule means having sufficient depth across every position is crucial, particularly during periods when injuries and suspensions begin to accumulate.

QPR have already strengthened important areas during the summer, particularly in goal, while the additions of Boy Kemper and Glen Kamara have also been viewed as promising pieces of business.

The club therefore appears to be heading in the right direction, but a few more additions could give Stephan the depth required to handle the long Championship campaign.

For now, though, the return of Varane, Smyth and Burrell is a timely boost, leaving Stephan with a strong selection of players to choose from for QPR’s opening-day trip to Portsmouth.
