Rangers Transfer Plans Gather Pace as More Deals Take Shape

Rangers appear to be closing in on another major attacking addition, with the club reportedly reaching an agreement in principle with PSV Eindhoven for Moroccan winger Couhaib Driouech.

According to the Rangers Review, negotiations are now at an advanced stage and the transfer could be completed soon, with the Scottish club expected to pay approximately £7 million for the 24-year-old.

Driouech, who is naturally right-footed but usually operates from the left flank, is reportedly due to travel for his medical on Tuesday. Rangers were interested in him before he joined PSV, and they have now revived their pursuit.

Although the winger is capable of playing on the right, Rangers are still looking to recruit another specialist right-sided attacker. The club wants greater depth, competition and variation in the final third.

Daisuke Yokota made an encouraging impression on his league debut against Hibernian on Sunday, despite Rangers suffering a 2-1 defeat. Nevertheless, the coaching staff believe additional competition is required.

Rangers explain their attacking recruitment

Rangers chief executive Jim Gillespie addressed the club’s recruitment strategy during Monday’s shareholder meeting, insisting that the emphasis on central positions earlier in the window was not deliberate.

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh explained that attacking reinforcements can be particularly difficult to secure because clubs face intense competition for quality forwards and wingers.

The Light Blues have also experienced several departures this summer. Nedim Bajrami and Oliver Antman have already moved on, while Ross McCausland and Lyall Cameron are available for transfer.

There is also uncertainty surrounding Youssef Chermiti after the striker suffered a knee problem against Hibernian. Rangers are waiting for the results of a scan but remain hopeful that the injury is not serious. The club turned down a £22 million offer for the 22-year-old on Sunday.

More Rangers arrivals expected

Cavenagh has suggested that Rangers could potentially add between three and five more players before the end of the month.

If Driouech completes his move, the club could end up exceeding the 13 arrivals recorded last summer, despite initially expecting to operate with a smaller recruitment programme this time around.

There could also be further movement in midfield.

Mohamed Diomande is expected to leave after Turkish club Corum FK agreed a deal worth £4.5 million for the midfielder. He still has two years remaining on his Rangers contract.

Nico Raskin could also depart before the window closes, although no formal offers have arrived for the Belgian so far. Connor Barron has meanwhile struggled for involvement following a disrupted pre-season and has been absent from several recent matchday squads.

Right-back another area Rangers are targeting

Rangers are also exploring defensive reinforcements, particularly at right-back.

The club has opened discussions with Aston Villa over Serbian defender Kosta Nedeljkovic. The 20-year-old, who has already earned 11 senior international caps, spent last season on loan at RB Leipzig and is one of several players Rangers are considering for the position.

The need for a right-back has become increasingly apparent, with Rangers already using four different players in that position this season.

New signing Vanja Dragojevic operated there at the weekend, while Dujon Sterling is unlikely to be able to start three games within a single week. Ross McCrorie, meanwhile, is viewed as a more defensive-minded alternative.

Adding another right-back would provide Sterling with the opportunity to cover at centre-back when necessary. Rangers are also considering a versatile full-back capable of playing on either side of the defence.

With Ashton Scally currently injured, the club wants to increase its flexibility and provide greater depth across the back line.

Rangers have also held talks with AEK Athens about former Hearts defender James Penrice, who can operate at left-back.

Meanwhile, John Souttar is expected to leave Ibrox this summer, with Leicester City currently believed to be the most likely destination.

Overall, Rangers remain highly active in the transfer market. Driouech appears to be close to becoming the latest arrival, but further attacking and defensive additions could follow before the window shuts.
