Josh Campbell reveals Rangers penalty confusion after bizarre Ibrox VAR delay

Josh Campbell has admitted he had no idea whether Rangers or Hibernian had been awarded a penalty during Sunday’s clash at Ibrox.

The midfielder eventually stepped up to convert from the spot, sending Rangers goalkeeper Ivor Pandur the wrong way and giving Hibs the lead.

But Campbell was left confused during the lengthy stoppage after referee Don Robertson stopped the game following an off-the-ball incident involving Vanja Dragojevic and Jason Kerr.

The decision was sent for a VAR review, leaving players and supporters waiting for clarification. Even Campbell, who would ultimately take the penalty, was unsure which team had been awarded the spot-kick.

“I hadn’t a clue. I thought we had given a penalty away, if I’m honest with you,” Campbell admitted.

It was only after he was told to take the penalty that he realised the decision had gone Hibs’ way.

“Then I was told that I was taking it and I was like, ‘Alright, it must be our penalty’,” he added.

The uncertainty surrounding the decision only increased the pressure on Campbell, who had to remain focused while the officials reviewed the incident.

Despite not knowing what was happening initially, the Hibs midfielder kept his composure when the opportunity finally arrived.

“I was just happy to step up and score,” Campbell said.

His successful spot-kick gave Hibs an important advantage at Ibrox and capped a remarkable sequence of events that left even the player taking the penalty unsure about what decision had been made.
