Wrexham Close in on £8m Deal for Sunderland Goalkeeper Anthony Patterson

Wrexham have reached an agreement with Sunderland over an £8 million transfer for goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, according to GIVEMESPORT sources.

The Welsh club have once again been active in the transfer market as they prepare for another Championship campaign. After narrowly missing out on the play-offs last season, manager Phil Parkinson has already strengthened his squad with the arrivals of Danny Imray from Crystal Palace and Ben Whiteman from Preston.

Wrexham have now turned their attention to the goalkeeper position, with Patterson set to arrive as their new first-choice option. If completed, the transfer would make the 26-year-old the second-most expensive player in the club’s history.

Patterson set for Racecourse Ground switch

Patterson earned plenty of praise during Sunderland’s successful 2024/25 promotion campaign, playing an important role as the Black Cats returned to the Premier League. However, his position as Sunderland’s first-choice goalkeeper changed following the arrival of Robin Roefs last summer.

After spending the second half of the previous season on loan with Millwall, Patterson once again demonstrated his ability at Championship level. His performances have now convinced Wrexham to invest £8 million in bringing him to the Racecourse Ground.

Sunderland were prepared to sanction the goalkeeper’s departure once their valuation was met, and that has now happened. Patterson has reportedly been given permission to travel for his medical before completing the move.

Wrexham are hoping to finalise the transfer quickly enough for Patterson to be available for their opening league fixture against Welsh rivals Cardiff next Monday.

The goalkeeper already has extensive Championship experience, having made 147 appearances in the division. During his recent loan spell with Millwall, he featured 17 times in all competitions, conceding 15 goals while recording seven clean sheets and making 40 saves.

Patterson will now look to use that experience to help Wrexham achieve their promotion ambitions as the club continues to grow under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Le Bris previously defended Patterson

Patterson played a significant role in Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League, producing a number of important performances during their successful campaign.

There were occasions when the goalkeeper came under scrutiny for individual mistakes, but former Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris was quick to defend him and highlighted his overall consistency.

Le Bris acknowledged that Patterson still had areas of his game to improve but insisted that his overall contribution had been strong throughout the season.

The Sunderland boss pointed out that one mistake could have a major impact on a particular match, but argued that Patterson’s performances across the wider campaign showed his quality.

Now, with Sunderland willing to part company with him for £8 million, Patterson is on the verge of beginning a new chapter with Wrexham and could soon become a key figure in their push for promotion.
