Shaun Maloney provides positive Martin O’Neill update

Shaun Maloney will take charge from the Celtic dugout at Rugby Park when the Hoops face Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Martin O’Neill is currently recovering after undergoing a “small procedure” in hospital, meaning Maloney will lead the team from the touchline. However, the Celtic boss has remained involved despite his absence and has continued to encourage his players from the team hotel.

Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland shortly before kick-off, Maloney revealed that O’Neill had spoken to the squad following their team meeting.

The latest update will come as a boost to Celtic supporters, with O’Neill reportedly making good progress in his recovery and potentially set to return to the dugout for next weekend’s League Cup clash with Dundee United on Saturday, August 15.

“He is doing loads better,” Maloney said.

“He was at the team hotel. Spoke to the players just after the meeting. He’s in good form. Just needs a couple of days.

“I think we are all hopeful for that [to be back for Dundee United]. I guess he will take it day-to-day, but he is definitely in good spirits. We will see how he is in a week.”

While O’Neill’s potential return will be welcomed, there is no need for the experienced manager to rush himself back.

Celtic remain in capable hands with Maloney, Mark Fotheringham and Stephen McManus overseeing matters from the touchline, allowing O’Neill the time he needs to make a full recovery.

The Celtic manager’s health must remain the priority, particularly after his recent hospital procedure. His absence has also demonstrated the strength of the coaching team around him.

Nevertheless, O’Neill’s influence on this Celtic side remains significant.

The veteran manager played a major role in last season’s domestic double, guiding the Hoops through a turbulent campaign and helping maintain their push for silverware despite the challenges they faced.
