Reo Hatate’s Celtic future takes fresh turn as departure edges closer

Reo Hatate appears increasingly likely to leave Celtic before the transfer window shuts, although his next destination remains uncertain.

The Japan international has made it known that he would like a new challenge, potentially bringing an end to his Celtic career after arriving from Kawasaki Frontale in January 2022. He has been part of a highly successful period for the club, with former teammate Daizen Maeda also making the move to Glasgow at the same time before departing for Ipswich Town this summer.

Hatate quickly established himself as an influential midfielder under Ange Postecoglou and remained an important player during Brendan Rodgers’ tenure. His role became less prominent towards the end of last season under Martin O’Neill, but he still showed flashes of the quality that has made him such a popular figure among Celtic supporters.

His performance at Ibrox was a prime example. Coming off the bench, Hatate produced a crucial late equaliser after Celtic had fallen two goals behind, once again demonstrating his ability to change a match when given the opportunity.

Despite his desire to move on, there has yet to be a formal offer capable of taking negotiations to the next stage.

According to a fresh report from Stephen McGowan in The Herald, Hatate is attracting interest from a number of destinations, including English Championship club West Ham, as well as teams in France and MLS.

West Ham’s interest comes as they look to rebuild following relegation, with an immediate return to the Premier League expected to be a major objective. Hatate’s technical ability and experience could make him an attractive option as they reshape their midfield.

A move to France would offer the 28-year-old the opportunity to continue competing at a high level in Ligue 1, while MLS represents another possible route should he decide on a different footballing and lifestyle experience.

For now, however, interest has not translated into a concrete proposal. Hatate still has two years remaining on his Celtic contract, meaning the club are under no immediate pressure to accept an offer that does not meet their valuation.

Finding a replacement would also be a significant challenge. At his best, Hatate combines creativity, work rate and technical quality, with an ability to produce decisive moments in important matches.

With Celtic’s Premiership opener against Dundee approaching, Hatate could still feature for the champions if selected. But with his future unresolved and several clubs reportedly monitoring his situation, the coming weeks could ultimately mark the end of his time in Glasgow.
