Fresh twist emerges in Derby County’s reported Turki Alalshikh takeover

Derby County are reportedly edging closer to a significant ownership change, with fresh reports suggesting negotiations over a takeover involving Saudi businessman Turki Alalshikh have reached an advanced stage.

The Rams have rebuilt steadily since David Clowes rescued the club from administration in 2022, and after securing Championship survival before narrowly missing out on the play-offs last season, optimism around Pride Park has continued to grow under head coach John Eustace.

That optimism could receive another boost after reports claimed Clowes is close to agreeing a deal to sell his majority stake to Alalshikh, who has previously been linked with investments in several football clubs.

According to the latest reports, the English Football League has already cleared Alalshikh to continue the acquisition process. The proposed takeover will still require approval from the Independent Football Regulator before it can be completed, but no major obstacles are believed to have emerged.

The potential investment has generated excitement among many Derby supporters, with some believing it could strengthen the club’s long-term ambitions both on and off the pitch.

Others, however, have urged caution. While additional financial backing could accelerate improvements to facilities, recruitment and infrastructure, some fans hope Clowes will remain involved after earning widespread praise for guiding the club through one of the most difficult periods in its history.

Any takeover is unlikely to change Derby’s spending power overnight, with the club still expected to operate within football’s financial regulations despite the prospect of wealthy new ownership.

Should the deal receive final approval, attention will quickly turn to how Derby approach the remainder of the transfer window. Eustace has already strengthened his squad with the permanent signing of Bobby Clark, and further additions could follow if the club’s ownership situation is resolved.
