Coventry City preparing blockbuster £20m deal for Premier League ace
Coventry City are reportedly preparing to break their transfer record as they gear up for life back in the Premier League following promotion under Frank Lampard.
After storming to the Championship title with an impressive 95-point haul, the Sky Blues are expected to strengthen significantly this summer as they prepare for their long-awaited return to England’s top flight for the first time since 2001.
One key area Coventry are eager to address is between the posts, with the club determined to retain goalkeeper Carl Rushworth following his standout loan spell last season.

The Brighton shot-stopper played a major role in Coventry’s promotion push, registering 17 clean sheets across 46 Championship appearances and earning a place in the division’s Team of the Season.
Rushworth’s performances reportedly attracted wider attention, with suggestions that England manager Thomas Tuchel had monitored the highly-rated goalkeeper during the campaign.
Despite still being contracted to Brighton, Coventry are now pushing to secure the 24-year-old on a permanent basis.
According to journalist Sam Cohen, the newly-promoted side have tabled a £20 million offer for Rushworth, with talks between the clubs ongoing.
Should the deal go through at that figure, it would comfortably surpass Coventry’s existing transfer record and mark the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
That current benchmark belongs to striker Haji Wright, who joined the Sky Blues from Antalyaspor in 2023 for £7.7 million and has since become a key figure at the club.
Prior to Wright’s arrival, Coventry’s biggest outlay came in 2003 when they paid £5.5 million to sign Craig Bellamy from Norwich City.
Rushworth, meanwhile, is no stranger to proving himself away from his parent club. The goalkeeper has spent time on six separate loan spells during his development and is still awaiting his senior debut for Brighton.
Reflecting on his rise earlier this year, the England Under-21 international explained that gradual progression through the leagues played a crucial role in his development.
Beginning his senior journey in non-league football at Worthing, Rushworth steadily climbed through League Two and League One, gaining valuable experience and physical resilience along the way.
He believes those loan moves helped shape him into the goalkeeper he is today and prepared him for the demands of Premier League football.
For Coventry, landing Rushworth permanently would represent a major statement of intent as Lampard looks to build a squad capable of surviving — and competing — in the top flight.
