Sheffield Wednesday are facing the challenge of rebuilding after a difficult season that ended in relegation to League One following turmoil both on and off the field.

Windass recently caught the attention of supporters after posting a nostalgic message reflecting on his time at Hillsborough. The attacker shared a photo on Instagram from Wednesday’s dramatic League One play-off semi-final triumph over Peterborough United in 2023, captioning it simply: “What a time.”

That memorable tie remains one of the most iconic moments in the club’s recent history. After suffering a crushing 4-0 defeat in the first leg, Wednesday mounted a stunning comeback at Hillsborough, winning 5-1 to force extra time and eventually progressing via a penalty shootout.

The victory secured a place at Wembley, where Darren Moore’s side defeated Barnsley 1-0 to seal promotion to the Championship, with Windass playing a crucial role during that successful campaign.

His departure later came amid the club’s financial crisis, eventually leading to a move to Wrexham after his contract was terminated by mutual consent. Windass went on to impress in Wales, registering 16 goals and five assists in 41 Championship appearances as Phil Parkinson’s side narrowly missed out on a play-off place, finishing seventh.

Despite the circumstances surrounding his exit, Windass remains a popular figure among Wednesday supporters thanks to his memorable contributions, particularly during the 2023 promotion run and his decisive Wembley moment.
