Barry Bannan makes fresh Sheffield Wednesday admission as return rumours intensify
Barry Bannan drops fresh Sheffield Wednesday message amid return talk
Barry Bannan has reignited talk of a potential return to Sheffield Wednesday after reflecting fondly on one of the club’s greatest recent moments.
The Owls are preparing for life back in League One with renewed optimism following the completion of the club’s takeover by Arise Capital Partners. With no points deduction hanging over them, the focus is firmly on mounting a promotion push, though much work remains for boss Henrik Pedersen after inheriting a squad in need of major rebuilding.

One name already linked with a return to Hillsborough is former captain Bannan, whose January departure to Millwallbrought an emotional end to more than a decade of service in South Yorkshire.
The midfielder’s spell in London has not gone entirely to plan, fuelling speculation over a possible reunion with Wednesday this summer. While no move has materialised, Bannan showed the club still holds a special place in his heart after posting a nostalgic message on Instagram marking three years since Wednesday’s unforgettable play-off final triumph over Barnsley.
Sharing an image of the packed Wednesday support at Wembley, Bannan wrote: “No empty seats when the Owls make Wembley, what a day.”
That dramatic afternoon saw a late extra-time winner from Josh Windass secure victory after Wednesday had already staged an astonishing comeback against Peterborough United in the semi-finals.
With fresh ownership now in place and room to strengthen the squad, many Wednesday fans will feel the club should do everything possible to bring Bannan back. At 36, he may no longer be central to Alex Neil’s plans at Millwall, but his leadership, quality and experience could prove invaluable in League One.
For a club aiming to rebuild and bounce back at the first attempt, a Hillsborough reunion may make perfect sense for everyone involved.
