Coventry City F.C. plot swoop for experienced Aston Villa F.C. player nearing free agency
Coventry City F.C. are lining up a move for Ross Barkley, with the midfielder’s contract at Aston Villa F.C. set to expire at the end of the season.
Lampard’s admiration for Barkley
Coventry boss Frank Lampard knows Barkley well from their time together at Chelsea F.C. and has long praised his unique qualities. Lampard previously highlighted Barkley’s ability to beat players, use both feet, and produce moments of creativity out of nothing—traits he considers invaluable in midfield.

Although Barkley showed flashes of quality at Chelsea, he struggled to fully establish himself, spending time on loan with OGC Nice before later reviving his form at Luton Town F.C.. During the 2023–24 Premier League season, he impressed with five goals and five assists in 32 appearances.

That form earned him a move to Villa, where he has been a regular contributor when fit, though injuries have disrupted his campaign at times.
Uncertain future at Villa Park
Barkley’s long-term future at Villa Park remains unclear, with the club yet to confirm whether they will trigger an extension clause in his deal. That uncertainty has opened the door for Coventry, who are exploring the possibility of bringing him in this summer.
Villa manager Unai Emery has also praised Barkley’s performances, underlining his value to the squad when available.
Coventry could target more Villa talent
There is also speculation that Coventry could look to strengthen further by targeting another Villa midfielder, Lamare Bogarde. The young player faces stiff competition for minutes, and a move could offer him more consistent first-team football.
Former Villa scout Bryan King suggested Coventry could be a suitable destination, noting the club’s need to add Premier League experience as they look to build a stronger squad.
