Points deduction update: West Brom face potential blow with Morrison ban and EFL involvement

West Bromwich Albion F.C. are under investigation for a potential breach of the EFL’s Profit and Sustainability rules, with a possible points deduction that could significantly affect the Championship relegation battle.

The club is accused of exceeding financial regulations during the 2024/25 accounting period, with scrutiny focused on interest payments linked to loans from the previous ownership. While West Brom maintain they have complied with all rules, the EFL is continuing its review.

League regulations state that any sanctions must be applied within the same season to ensure competitive fairness, although a final decision date has not yet been confirmed. Officials are reportedly aiming to resolve the situation before the end of the current campaign.

The uncertainty has added further tension to the relegation fight, with several clubs potentially affected depending on the outcome. Any points deduction for West Brom could see them dragged into the bottom three.

Meanwhile, caretaker manager James Morrison has taken steps to keep focus inside the dressing room, reportedly banning players and staff from discussing the issue ahead of their clash with Preston North End F.C..

Morrison stressed the importance of concentration on the pitch, saying the situation is “a big story externally” but not something the squad will be distracted by.

Elsewhere, Gary Rowett has called for clarity from the EFL, urging a swift resolution so all clubs know where they stand before the season reaches its conclusion. However, he also insisted that his focus remains unchanged, with preparations continuing as normal regardless of off-field developments.
