West Brom issued statement amid EFL charge over financial breach

West Bromwich Albion are facing a serious threat of relegation to League One under James Morrison.

The Baggies currently sit just two points above the drop zone with four matches remaining, leaving their Championship status hanging in the balance. Having not fallen below the top two tiers of English football since 1993, the possibility of a points deduction could prove decisive.

Rivals Leicester City have already been penalised with a six-point deduction for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), pushing them into the relegation places.

West Brom have now been charged by the EFL for a potential PSR breach linked to last season’s financial accounts. While the alleged breach is believed to be minor, any sanction could still be applied before the end of the current campaign.

The club has responded by insisting they are compliant with regulations and will cooperate fully with the investigation, maintaining confidence that no punishment will follow.

Financial expert Kieran Maguire estimates the club may have exceeded the limit by around £1 million, suggesting a relatively small penalty if found guilty—likely fewer points than Leicester’s deduction.

In addition to a points deduction, other possible sanctions include a fine or transfer restrictions, depending on the outcome of the case.
