Martin O’Neill has explained his selection decisions involving Kelechi Iheanacho and Arne Engels ahead of Celtic F.C.’s clash with St Mirren F.C..

Both players were named among the substitutes, despite Iheanacho coming off the bench to score the winner against Dundee United F.C. last weekend. Meanwhile, Engels has only just returned from injury, having been sidelined for the past two months.

Speaking before kick-off, O’Neill stressed that fitness was the key factor behind his decisions. He explained that while Iheanacho made a significant impact in the previous match, starting him could have risked him not lasting the full game. As a result, Tomas was preferred to lead the line, with the manager confident his bench options could still influence proceedings.

O’Neill also highlighted the importance of substitutes playing a decisive role, especially at this stage of the season. He acknowledged that being left out of the starting XI can be frustrating, but encouraged players to focus on making an impact when called upon.

Celtic’s campaign has been heavily disrupted by injuries, with several key players unavailable. Jota has been out since last year, while Alistair Johnston is still working his way back. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Julian Araujo have also been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
