Despite his incredible basketball skills, Ja Morant (Memphis Grizzlies) is more than that. His explosiveness, inventiveness, and leadership qualities combine to make him a formidable force.
However, some free agents may be hesitant to team up with him due to the complexity that lies beneath the surface. Scott Thomas explains in his piece why ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith thinks that Morant is the main reason free agents are reluctant to sign with the Memphis Express.
“The people in Memphis, it’s a great sports town — great fans, great people — but there’s an element there where cats like Jimmy Butler and others don’t feel like it’s the safest environment,” Smith explained, via Front Office Sports. “I’m having a conversation with the Memphis city officials. It’s discouraging to NBA players, so you should clear up some of it.
They have broached the subject.
Yes, I am aware. This is what they have informed me. I am merely stating that.
Morant’s Issues with Guns
Morant burst onto the NBA scene as an explosive talent, a two-time All-Star known for his electrifying drives and leadership on the court. Yet, his off-court choices involving firearms have repeatedly overshadowed his on-court achievements and posed serious challenges to his career.
Morant first came under scrutiny when, during an Instagram Live session at a nightclub, he brandished a handgun.
The video went viral, prompting the Memphis Grizzlies to suspend him and the NBA to hand down an eight-game suspension.
Though he entered a counseling program and issued a public apology, the incident began a troubling pattern.
A subsequent video featuring him in a car, once again openly holding a firearm, emerged a few months later.
An additional punishment was imposed without delay; this one was lengthier and was linked to the league’s requirement that all players undergo counselling.
Concern over his lack of direction and accountability has grown among his teammates, franchise executives, and league officials.
Morant Injuries
Morant has periodically battled minor issues such as knees, ankles, wrists, and back. These soft-tissue issues haven’t derailed his seasons but have led to missed practices and reduced training sessions. For a player whose explosiveness is his lifeblood, optimal conditioning is paramount, and even slight physical hiccups can interfere with his rhythm.
“Did you know he was on the injured list 15 times this season with eight different ailments — hamstring, shoulder, knee, foot, hip, thigh, illness?” said Smith. “Fifteen times. The best ability is availability. If there’s a question about his availability, now it’s a different discussion. I need you on that damn court,” said Smith.
It is indisputable that Morant is one of the most promising young players in the NBA.
However, his image has taken a hit, he has lost a lot of money, and nobody is paying attention to his game because of his history of injuries and events involving firearms.
The vast majority of NBA players are looking to join a winning team and play alongside an established superstar.
Injuries and gun control will be his next professional challenges as he seeks to attract free agents and increase his team’s winning percentage.
