Was Jadon Sancho ‘kicked out’ of Man Utd? Man United director Dan Ashworth provides an explanation for the eccentric winger’s deadline-day transfer to Chelsea.

Dan Ashworth has addressed allegations that Jadon Sancho was “kicked out” of Manchester United, as the winger is currently on loan at Chelsea.

England international Sancho was permitted to return to Borussia Dortmund for the latter half of the 2023-24 campaign after falling out of favour under Erik ten Hag last season. He appeared to have been presented with a clear slate upon his return to Old Trafford, as he graced the Champions League final with BVB.

Sancho appeared for United during their preseason tour of America and missed a penalty after coming off the bench in the Community Shield. However, he did not receive any Premier League minutes before completing a transfer to Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day, which included an obligation to purchase.

When questioned about the allegations that Sancho was coerced from Manchester, United director Ashworth stated, “I believe that with any player, whether it be Jadon, Scott (McTominay), or Aaron (Wan Bissaka), if there is a preference to move and join a new club that is mutually beneficial, then you must investigate it.” We believed that we had sufficient depth in that specific position to adequately address it. We have four exceptional wide players; Jadon was the fifth. This allowed us to determine that if it was beneficial for both parties, we were willing to take it into account.

In response to the assertion that Sancho had no future under Ten Hag, Ashworth stated, “That has nothing to do with it.” We made a decision to determine whether it is appropriate for Jadon and for us to proceed forward. He desired to investigate the opportunity at Chelsea, as Scott did at Napoli, and Aaron did at West Ham. We are not in a position to expel players from the club.

Since joining United from Dortmund in 2021, Sancho has only made 83 appearances for the club, scoring only 12 goals. He will be expecting to rekindle a lost spark amidst the intense competition for wing positions in west London.
