One of Manchester City’s former players may generate additional revenue this summer.

It is probable that Pep Guardiola and his colleagues have already devised their strategies for the summer transfer window in advance of the upcoming Premier League season. City will be able to negotiate agreements for new signings to arrive at the Etihad Stadium once the window formally opens on Friday.

The budget that City will have to deal with this summer for new signings is yet to be determined. Nevertheless, it appears that a previous transaction that resulted in a player departing the Etihad in the past could potentially increase Guardiola’s transfer budget this summer.

In 2019, Douglas Luiz relocated from City to Aston Villa in a £15 million transaction. He has since evolved into a critical midfielder for the Midlands club, contributing to Villa’s qualification for the Champions League.

Arsenal has been frequently mentioned as a potential candidate for Luiz this summer, with Villa purportedly seeking approximately £50 million for the midfielder in recent days. During his tenure as assistant coach at City to Guardiola, the Brazilian has collaborated with Mikel Arteta.

City incorporated a buy-back clause into Luiz’s contract with Villa; however, it expired in 2021 following his initial two seasons at Villa Park. In 2022, The Athletic reported that City also incorporated a sell-on clause into the transfer.

The percentage of a prospective transfer fee that City would be entitled to if Luiz were to depart Villa was not specified. However, it appears that a portion of the £50 million transfer fee would be allocated to City in the event that the midfielder were to join a new club.

Luiz was unable to participate in City’s first-team matches as a result of his inability to obtain a visa to play for the club. He spent two seasons on loan at Girona before permanently departing City to join Villa, where he has since become one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League.
