TRANSFER NEWS: Man City identify new goalkeeper amid Ederson exit speculations
Reportedly, Manchester City has identified a potential replacement for Ederson as their starting goalkeeper as rumors circulate that he may pursue new pastures this summer.
Since his £35 million transfer from Benfica to the Etihad Stadium in June 2017, Ederson has been the Citizens’ undisputed first-choice shot-stopper.
In his seven-year tenure with the club, the 30-year-old has amassed 332 appearances for Manchester City across all competitions, maintaining 155 clean sheets and bringing home 17 trophies.
Ederson surpassed Peter Schmeichel as the Premier League leader in victories held by any goalkeeper in the division’s history on May 6th, following his sixth championship with Manchester City.
Controversy has emerged this month regarding a potential summer departure for the Brazil international, who has two years remaining on his contract at the Etihad and continues to be an integral member of Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Recently published reports indicate that Ederson’s departure from Manchester City is a “possibility” should he receive a “good proposal” this summer.
Ederson appeared visibly enraged after suffering a fractured eye socket and exiting a Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month. Following the match, he indicated on social media that his injury was not the only cause of his rage.
Ederson did so, stating on Instagram, “Only I comprehend.” His reply of “See you soon” sparked speculation as to whether he was alluding to the fact that his final match for Manchester City has already transpired.
Al-Nassr, a club in the Saudi Pro League and the team of Cristiano Ronaldo, are rumored to be offering approximately £25 million to acquire Ederson for transfer to the Middle East.
It is rumored that Al-Nassr are seeking a new goalkeeper, as incumbent number one David Ospina, 35, is scheduled to depart the club at the conclusion of the current season due to contract expiration.
According to Football Insider, should Ederson decide to depart Manchester City this summer, the club is prepared to promote Stefan Ortega to the position of starting goalkeeper.
Since joining Manchester City as a free agent in the summer of 2022, Ortega has been second in importance to Ederson. As a result, he has made a mere 34 first-team appearances, the majority of which have occurred in cup competitions.
However, when called upon by Guardiola, the 31-year-old has performed admirably. Guardiola described the German as “one of the best goalkeepers” he has ever witnessed in light of his “incredible” impact as a substitute against Spurs earlier this month.
Ortega, who is anticipated to be eager to solidify his position at number one as he approaches his prime years of play, will shortly complete his contract at the Etihad and has not yet initiated extension discussions.
