TRANSFER: Manchester United release youngster defender to join Spanish giants Villarreal
Villarreal has acquired the services of Manchester United’s Willy Kambwala for a figure that has since increased to €11.5 million.
United intends to generate an initial €5.5 million for the 19-year-old, with the potential for an additional €6 million in add-ons. Additionally, they possess a substantial sell-on clause.
They also have a buy-back option for the centre-back, who had one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford and had declined a new deal.
Kambwala, who appeared in 10 matches for the club, becomes the second French center-back to depart United this summer, following the release of Raphael Varane.
United has made two bids for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and is in discussions with Bayern Munich regarding Matthijs de Ligt, as they continue to overhaul the interior of their defence. They are seeking to make at least one signing and potentially two. Furthermore, they have extended Jonny Evans’ contract by one year.
In addition, United is of the opinion that it is imperative that they enhance their ability to promote youth-team products and fringe players who they do not anticipate becoming first-team regulars. In that category, Kambwala joins Alvaro Fernandez, who relocated to Benfica.
The sale of Kambwala will contribute to the funding of United’s summer transfer business, following the acquisition of forward Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, who was the first signing of the close-season.
“Willy Kambwala fought for his dream, and he achieved it,” the club stated on X.
“We extend our best wishes for the future to the defender as he joins Villarreal.”
In April, Kambwala played a critical role in the centre of defence during the 2-2 Premier League draw against Liverpool at Anfield, where he made his senior debut at the age of 19 on the road at West Ham.
He made his final appearance for the club in May, coming on as a substitute in the 75th minute against Arsenal.
