Trade Talk: Grizzlies’ Konchar Conundrum – Move On or Hold On?
Grizzlies have tried for years to trade Konchar, should they stilll try to find a workable deal?
The Grizzlies extended John Konchar’s contract by three years, or almost $18.5 million, in July 2022.
He still has two years to go on that deal. Grizzlies fans were disappointed by the veteran wing’s market value, despite his usefulness anytime his name was called for significant minutes played.
Before the Brooklyn Nets sent him to the Lakers in December of last year, he was supposedly part of a trade package to get Dorian Finney-Smith, a forward for the Nets.
The function of Konchar on the squad, as a 15th man who can play when needed, has not changed from previous season.
However, the team might be looking to part ways with the seventh-highest-paid player in that role.
The Grizzlies are set to let John Konchar’s contract expire.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) altered the wage cap regulations, which made it more difficult for clubs to field “superteams.”
This change altered the NBA landscape. Regrettably, those regulations were not implemented until 2023, a full year after the Grizzlies extended Konchar’s contract.
Konchar’s extension was set to take effect during the 2024–25 season. In a period without salary caps, the Grizzlies might have been able to trade for draft picks because to Konchar’s production as a versatile role player; however, his current $6 million contract is a major turnoff.
Even though he was a regular starter for the Grizzlies when he signed his contract, the team has subsequently added more quality players who have eclipsed him.
Konchar, who is only 29 years old and entering his sixth season with the club, has been demoted to the role of a seasoned bench player.
This means the Grizzlies won’t be able to trade him for much of anything, and their chances of doing so will keep shrinking.
Fortunately, his contract isn’t entirely detrimental because the Grizzlies are in a strong position according to the salary cap and apron regulations.
For a club with the financial wherewithal to sign a player of his calibre, he will be an asset due to his versatility and reliability.
