Carlos Tevez was the first player in modern times to pick Manchester City over Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson was worried about his choice.
“They think and act like a small club.” They can’t stop talking about Manchester United.
Throughout his career, Sir Alex Ferguson said many mean things about Manchester City, but this sneering attack in 2009 was the worst. Not long after Sheikh Mansour took over, the loud neighbors began to show their teeth and make more noise.
Outbursts often show how a manager really feels about a subject. Erik ten Hag, the current manager of United, has been accused of feeling the pressure after he scolded Jamie Carragher and Fulham’s TikTok admin this week.
United is now the team that needs to catch up, and they are the clear underdogs in Sunday’s match. People who back him are hoping that Sir Jim Ratcliffe can close the gap.
As you drive along Wharfside Way, you’ll see a red “Welcome to Manchester” sign with Ratcliffe’s picture on it. This version is a response to the Carlos Tevez version made by Man City in 2009, which made Ferguson so angry.
That Tevez picture was three miles away in Deansgate, and it may have been the start of a change in power in Manchester. Mark Hughes, the manager of City, said that the gesture was just harmless fun between fans of different teams, but his old boss at United did not agree.
“They believe that getting Carlos Tevez from Manchester United is a victory.” It’s bad stuff,” Ferguson said. In May 2009, Sir Alex said that United had made an offer for the West Ham loanee, even though the attacker had said he wanted to leave a week earlier.
At the time, the player’s agent denied those claims, but finally, a very good five-deal offer came in. But Tevez already knew what he wanted to do.
Since modern times, this was the first time a player United and their fans wanted to keep picked City over them. The table of power didn’t fall over right away, though.
United won the League Cup, but Chelsea beat them by one point for the title the next year. City, on the other hand, did not finish in the top four. The 2010–11 season would be a turning point for the Blues.
United won the Premier League title again, but City was beginning to catch up. Even though they came in third, nine points behind the red team, they still managed to cause trouble for them.
A Yaya Toure goal in the Wembley semi-final against United kept them from winning both trophies that season. In the other semi-final, Stoke City beat Bolton, who wasn’t as good as Stoke City. Toure scored again in the final, and Tevez, who is now captain, won the club’s first big trophy in 35 years.
Twelve months later, the way people talked about Tevez was a little different. Roberto Mancini said the scorer wouldn’t warm up before a Champions League game, which led to a fight and the player’s decision to leave the team for five months.
There were fans who wanted the Argentine to leave, and in October 2011, a new Tevez sign was put up in the away end at Blackburn Rovers. This one said “Tevez Out.” He finally said sorry, and he was very important in the last few months of the exciting 2012 season that won the title.
In Ferguson’s last season at Old Trafford before leaving, United won the title in 2013. But City came second, even though they were 11 points behind, and were now a regular title contender. During that summer, Tevez left for Juventus. He was a big part of the change in power in Manchester.
After three years and a title, Pep Guardiola took over and made it official. This started the club’s era of control. When it comes to signing players, City are now more popular than United. Even Cristiano Ronaldo was on his way to City until Ferguson called him to change his mind.
