This was an exciting year for the WTA, with six women successfully defending their titles.

There were some very good players who won back-to-back in 2024.

Auckland Open with Coco Gauff

The first successful title defence of 2024 happened in the first week of the year, when Gauff, ranked third in the world, won back-to-back titles in Auckland.

Top seed Gauff came back from being down a set to beat second seed Elina Svitolina 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3 to win the title this January. In the 2023 final, she beat Rebeka Masarova.

In 2024, the US star won three titles: the Shanghai Open, the WTA Finals, and this one.

Australia Open and Wuhan Open for Aryna Sabalenka

World No. 1 Sabalenka won four WTA titles in 2024. In two of those wins, she successfully defended her crowns.

In Melbourne in January, the Belarusian won her second Grand Slam by beating Zheng Qinwen in the final of the Australian Open.

Later that same year, Sabalenka won her third straight Wuhan Open title by beating Qinwen in another final. The event had been off for five years, but Sabalenka won it.

The US Open and the Cincinnati Open were also won by Sabalenka, and she made it to the finals in Madrid, Rome, and Brisbane.

Inga Swiatek won the French Open and the Qatar Open.

In 2024, Swiatek won more singles titles than any other woman. During the first few months of the season, she successfully protected her titles twice.

Back in February, the world No. 2 won her third straight Doha Open title by coming back from a set down to beat Elena Rybakina 7-6(8), 6-2 in the final.

Then, in June, Swiatek won her third French Open title, beating Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-1 to finish a “threepeat.” She had already won the title in Paris in 2022 and 2023.

Her other titles were in Indian Wells, Madrid, and Rome.

The Nottingham Open – Katie Boulter

Boulter won two WTA titles in 2024 and was one of the WTA players who grew the most that year.

Although the Brit’s biggest win was in San Diego, she was also able to protect her title in Nottingham, which is where she currently lives.

Boulter won her third WTA title by beating former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. In the semi-finals, she beat Emma Raducanu.

Open Zheng Qinwen in Palermo

This was a great season for Qinwen. The Chinese player won Olympic gold and the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, and she ended the year ranked No. 5 in the world.

Plus, she came in second place in Melbourne, Wuhan, and the WTA Finals. But in Palermo, she won both of her matches in a row.

In 2023, Qinwen beat Jasmine Paolini to win the title. This summer, she beat Karolina Muchova 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to win it again.

The Canadian Open has Jessica Pegula.

At times, Pegula’s season was rough, but she was able to protect her Canadian Open title in August thanks to a strong hard-court summer.

The American star beat Liudmila Samsonova to win the title in 2023, and this year she beat her fellow countrywoman Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 to win in Toronto.

The No. 7 player in the world also won in Berlin and came in second place in Cincinnati and the US Open.
