The Steelers’ offence is challenged by Ben Roethlisberger.
Before getting too excited, Ben Roethlisberger wants to see how the Pittsburgh Steelers do against some of the best defences in the NFL. The team’s recent run of wins has been nothing short of amazing.
Roethlisberger slammed any hype about Pittsburgh’s offence on the most recent episode of his Footbahlin show.
“How good are the defences that we’ve played so far?” What Roethlisberger said. “They’ve dropped some great DBs. They don’t have many guys in the backups. What will happen when we play a team with a great defence and a great pass rush all of a sudden? They can put a great guy on [Calvin] Austin III and double a guy, or maybe not double George Pickens.
With 23.4 points (No. 15) and 328.1 total yards (No. 16) per game, the Steelers’ offence is about in the middle of the pack in the league. However, they’ve had a lot more success on the ground (138.1 yards, No. 8) than through the air (190.0 yards, No. 25).
The receiving game has gotten better since Russell Wilson became the starting quarterback, though. He has thrown for 542 yards and three scores in two games, against the New York Jets in Week 7 and the New York Giants in Week 8. He has also completed 63.2% of his passes. Additionally, the offence as a whole gained 835 yards during that time, which helped the Steelers take a 30–point lead.
The Jets (12th) and Giants (14th) both have scoring defences that are in the top fifteen right now. The Giants have the most sacks of any team with 35, while the Jets are sixth with 23. Neither unit was a slouch, though.
Adding to that, Pittsburgh has already played two of the best defences in the NFL: the Los Angeles Chargers (13.9 points per game, 305.4 yards per game allowed) and the Denver Broncos (30 sacks, 282.6 yards per game allowed). It hasn’t been easy for them to get to 6-2.
In addition, Roethlisberger said that he would like to see the Steelers show themselves against top teams in the future, but that they’ve done a good job so far.
“I just want to pump the brakes a little bit, just because we don’t know what we’re gonna get when we face a really good defence,” Roethlisberger stated. “But, they’re doing what they have to do right now, and that’s all that matters.”
