The secret hidden message Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino whispered Cole Palmer before scoring the winning goal against Manchester United revealed
On Thursday evening, Chelsea triumphed over Manchester United under the most dramatic of circumstances, thanks to Cole Palmer’s indelible hat-trick.
On the sixth anniversary of the demise of Ray Wilkins, a legendary Chelsea player who was also a Manchester United player, it was appropriate that two of his former clubs collaborated to produce a Premier League performance that will go down in history.
It felt enormous prior to the match. It does so whenever a club such as Manchester United visits the area. The police presence outside Stamford Bridge is greater. In general, the location is surrounded by a greater degree of conversation.
Nonetheless, some apprehension was present, most notably among the Chelsea supporters. At the conclusion of Saturday afternoon’s match, Mauricio Pochettino essentially reprimanded his players for failing to demonstrate the mental fortitude necessary to represent the football club.
In SW6, the Blues were unable to secure all three points against Burnley, who played the entire second half with one man down. In the days preceding the match, Pochettino instructed his youthful squad to be more aggressive; this was a message that was unambiguous but nonetheless direct.
With regard to aggression, Chelsea’s start could not have been more ideal.
With just four minutes remaining, Conor Gallagher, who is frequently one of the most aggressive players on any football field, powered a low drive past Andre Onana to give the hosts a one-goal advantage.
Chelsea, however, were not done. Completely contrary. Antony made an awkward challenge on the Spaniard in response to Marc Cucurella’s surge of speed on the left flank; consequently, referee Jarred Gillett indicated the penalty spot. Predictably, one individual was designated to receive the strike.
In the weekend stalemate with Burnley, following a Panenka, Cole Palmer stood up and executed a considerably more conventional spot-kick into the bottom corner. The United supporters in the Shed End had not too long ago chanted “City reject” when the former Manchester City attacker collected a corner kick in front of them.
In less than twenty minutes, Chelsea had entered a hallucinatory state. The beginning of a game, and a monumental one at that, was surely not what their supporters had anticipated. However, the subsequent events might have been more apparent to the Blues’ fan base.
A capitulation took place. Moises Caicedo mishandifully passed the ball to Alejandro Garnacho, who managed to regain his composure in front of the Matthew Harding Stand and narrow the deficit. Later, Bruno Fernandes equalized with a back-post shot, and the home crowd in west London could feel a palpable sense of “here we go again” on a dreary evening.
As Garnacho charged in in the second half following a pass from Antony of world-class caliber, the atmosphere threatened to become combustible. Mason Mount, the Stamford Bridge pantomime villain, was introduced late in the match to further enliven the ambiance.
Late in the match, Chelsea had an abundance of the ball as they pressed for an equalizer, but they did not generate many clear-cut opportunities. However, Noni Madueke assumed the match’s burden and drove into the box, compelling Diogo Dalot to make the most feeble of challenges.
Gillett, who had already awarded the Blues one penalty in the first half, deliberated while communicating with his fellow officials via earpiece before eventually indicating the location, thereby adding to the tension. Palmer was beyond any reasonable doubt incapable of putting the ball past Onana.
Another emphatic spot-kick from the twenty-one-year-old, whose jubilation reflected his attitude. Palmer retrieved the ball in the 100th minute, when he tied the game. He desired further. Likewise, Pochettino did so.
Palmer stated post-match, “When we scored [the third goal], Pochettino said ‘two minutes, come on.'” “He is perpetually attempting to push us forward. We made an effort and, to our relief, achieved a victory.”
Similarly, Pochettino stated during his press conference following the match: “In the end, I maintained my faith. We were exhorting our athletes, “Two minutes remain.” We had faith in our ability to score the decisive goal.
After that, nothing but unadulterated anarchy ensued. Describable chaos. Pure and untainted destruction. Moments of anarchy that will be etched indelibly into the recollections of all those present at Stamford Bridge that evening, as well as those who observed from a distance.
Palmer was among two men who remained vigilant in a confined scenario. The corner-taker Enzo Fernandez was the other. Palmer, despite his technical prowess, simply smashed the ball as hard as he could in the direction of Onana’s goal after Enzo passed the ball short to him.
From a United perspective, it was unfortunate that Scott McTominay was struck, and the deflection prevented Onana from receiving it. Would it have entered regardless? I suppose so. Perhaps not. However, that is irrelevant.
Palmer scored his nineteenth goal for Chelsea in all competitions this season following his acquisition from Manchester City last summer. Although we discuss him on a weekly basis, it is becoming increasingly urgent that we generate additional compliments.
Seventh in his previous four contests. He is as his life has shaped him. A first hat-trick in one’s career. In opposition to the juvenile boy’s club of his.
We are all residing in the reality created by Cole Palmer. However, if Thursday night is any indication, we are living in another world.
