Liverpool reconstructed their roster with an abundance of newcomers during the summer, and the process will likely continue.

In the coming year, Liverpool is anticipated to continue restocking their roster, with Joel Matip being the next veteran to depart from Anfield. The defender is slated to become a free agent at the conclusion of the current campaign. Despite the absence of indications regarding a contract extension, a separation is becoming an increasingly probable outcome.

Over the course of a few months, Jurgen Klopp reconstructed his midfield in an effort to revitalize his aging squad, which was his primary objective during the summer. The club permitted the departures of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Fabinho, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, all of whom were replaced by Reds players who were acquired for substantial transfer fees.

Following the commitments of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo to Klopp’s initiative, the club substantially reduced the mean age of its squad.

It now appears that Liverpool will prioritize acquiring young backs, with academy product Jarrel Quansah becoming the most recent to advance. Matip is anticipated to be replaced in the coming windows by an additional youthful defender, who is expected to join Merseyside upon the expiration of his contract.

Although Matip has appeared in eight Premier League appearances thus far this season, Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk are the preferred starting central defenders and he is approaching his senior year. As a consequence, it appears unlikely that Liverpool will endeavor to retain the center-back beyond the current season.

Matip is free to negotiate a transfer with European clubs when the January transfer window commences, as his contract expires in 2024. Multiple clubs are reportedly closely monitoring his situation, and Klopp’s laudatory assessments of the defender may entice additional clubs to express interest in signing him on a free agent basis.

Last year, the former Borussia Dortmund manager remarked of Matip, “He is simply phenomenal. He is a phenomenal athlete. “When discussing the most exceptional transfer free acquisitions, it is possible that Joel and Millie [James Milner] would be in a close race.”

Liverpool is considering acquiring a younger replacement for Matip in the future, with Chelsea star Levi Colwill being a candidate, prior to him signing a contract extension at Stamford Bridge this summer. Merseyside has been linked to Sporting star Goncalo Inacio as an alternative destination, and Manchester United is also extremely interested in the Portugal international.
