The Cowboys may soon have more help because DT is coming back from injury reserve.

This season, Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Mazi Smith was meant to be the team’s rock, and he had plenty of chances to show what he could do. Dallas added some help when it became clear during the preseason that he wasn’t ready for the bigger part.

They first traded for experienced Jordan Phillips and then signed Linval Joseph as a free agent. Joseph has only played a few times, but the Cowboys haven’t had Phillips since the first game. With a wrist injury, the 32-year-old was sent to the injured reserve list after playing against the Cleveland Browns.

In the end, Phillips caused trouble when he said he wasn’t hurt. On the bright side, he did have surgery on his wrist off-season, but the timing of his IR was, to say the least, strange.

Happily, Phillips was able to fully participate in practice on Wednesday after being given the all-clear. Against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 8, he was ruled out. But he could play against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9 if they get health clearance.

This season, Dallas has had a hard time stopping the run because their interior tackles are getting picked on at the line of scrimmage. Because Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Marshawn Kneeland are all hurt, they haven’t been able to make a steady pass rush either.

Although Phillips may not be as strong as he was in 2019 (when he had 9.5 sacks for Buffalo), he is a 6-foot-6, 330-pound monster who can help rush the passer and hopefully slow down the run. Whatever help they can get right now, no matter how small, should be accepted.
